Back in Ithaca(伊薩卡島) , some suitors plot to ambush Telemachus’ ship on his return trip. But Athena aids Telemachus in reaching Ithaca undetected. ? Proteus海神 ——普羅忒奧斯 Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering(漫游) on the Sea Athena pleads to the gods and Zeus on Mount Olympus on behalf of the imprisoned(被封?。? Odysseus and Telemachus, and Zeus sends Hermes(赫爾墨斯) to order Calypso(卡利普索) to release her prisoner. Hermes races to Calypso’s island and conveys Zeus’ mand. The goddess is furious, pointing out that male gods are allowed to take mortal lovers while female ones are not. But she cannot defy Zeus, so reluctantly(嫌惡的) she agrees and informs the weeping(哭泣的) Odysseus of the new plans. Calypso tries to convince Odysseus that she is better than his mortal wife. Odysseus flatters her but insists that he long for home. ? Odysseus and Calypso ?奧德修斯和卡利普索 Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea With Calypso’s help, Odysseus makes his raft(乘筏) and leaves. He sails for seventeen more days until he nears Scheria(斯科里亞島) , but Poseidon(波塞冬) sees him and realizes the gods have freed him. He sends a violent storm(暴風(fēng)驟雨) , which destroys Odysseus’ boat. Odysseus nearly gets drowned when a minor seagoddess, named Ino(伊諾) , gives him her magic veil(面紗) that keeps him afloat. Athena calms the storm, and Odysseus swims for two days before arriving at Scheria, island of the Phaeacians(費(fèi)阿克斯人) . With some difficulties he gets on land and, exhausted, he is soon asleep. Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea The next morning Odysseus is found by Princess Nausicaa(娜烏西卡) and some of her maids while they are doing the palace laundry near the river. They give him food to eat and clothes to wear and direct him to the city. Odysseus goes to the palace of King Alcinous(阿爾奇諾斯) and Queen Arete(阿勒特) , where he is received with great kindness and generosity. The king and the queen promise to help him to travel to Ithaca. After a couple of days of resting there, at a banquet of the Phaecian nobility, the blind bard Demodocus(得摩多科斯) sings a song about Odysseus and Achilles at Troy and then sing of an affair between Ares and Aphrodite(阿佛洛狄特) , which ended when the jealous husband Hephaestus(赫菲斯托斯) fed chains, snared them, and invited the other gods to witness the adulterers(奸夫) caught in the act. Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea During the feast Princess Nausicaa(娜烏西卡) asks Odysseus to remember her。 he should return home secretly, without warning his wife. Odysseus talked with other shadows, including Achilles(阿基里斯) who ruled that part of the Underworld, and the hero, Ajax the Greater, who was still angry and refused to talk to him. He saw Tantalus(坦塔羅斯) , tortured by food and drink always just out of reach, and Sisyphus(科林斯王) , perpetually pushing a boulder up a hill. After the sight of so many dead became unbearable to Odysseus, he fled to his ship and he and his men sailed out of the Underworld. The Trojan War: The Odyssey ? The wandering on the Sea Returning to Circe’s(賽斯) island, Circe gave further instructions to Odysseus about the Sirens(賽壬) , and Scylla(斯庫拉) and Charybdis(卡律布狄斯) . After burying Elphenor’s body properly, Odysseus and his men set sail once more. The Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea The first encounter they came to was the island of the Sirens(賽壬) . Here beautiful nymphs(寧芙) with the body of halfbird and halfwoman attracted seamen with their dazzling songs and lured them onto the reefs surrounding their island, where the ships were wrecked(失事的船) . Odysseus wisely plugged his men’s ears with wax so they could not hear the enchanting songs. However, he had himself tied up to the mast so he could listen to the dongs. When the voices became audible he unsuccessfully tried to free himself, but the ship sailed past the island unharmed. ? Odysseus and the Sirens ?奧德修斯和賽壬 The Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea Next, the men must sail between Scylla(斯庫拉) and Charybdis(卡律布狄斯) . Scylla was a ferocious(殘忍的) sixheaded monster who sat upon a cliff and devoured seamen passing by. Across the narrow straight was Charybdis(卡律布狄斯) , a fierce whirlpool(漩渦) . To pass between both unharmed was impossible. Odysseus and his men safely steered past Charybdis, but when they came to Scylla, the monster snatched six men from the ship. ? Odysseus and Scylla ?奧德修斯和斯庫拉 The Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea The crew passed by the dangers and reached the island of Helius(赫利烏斯,太陽神) , the SunTitan. Odysseus warned them not to kill and eat the cattle of the sun god Helius. Though they were stocked with plenty of supply from Circe’s island, after a month or more of bad weather, their food was gone. The Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea When Odysseus went to pray to gods for break in weather, his crew killed some of the cattle and ate them. Helius(赫利烏斯) appealed(呼吁) to Zeus that Odysseus’ men who ate his cattle must be punished. Zeus gave him a positive response.
