Lawrence’s The RainbowRS 2006(02) (English) ZHANG MiaomiaoTutor: Professor Chen Yong1. IntroductionAs one of the twentieth century’s prolific novelists, David Herbert Lawrence (18851930) remains a significant force in modern fiction, both for his artistic work and his innovative vision. There are many literary criticisms having been made on his works from different perspectives, such as the gender relationship, the assertion of “bloodconsciousness” as opposed to “mentalconsciousness” and the view of nature. Yet what interests me most is his description of the alienated phenomenon in the modern civilization. The Rainbow is one of Lawrence’s major novels. In the novel, he criticized the modern industrial civilization sharply and discloses its disastrous influence on human nature. This paper tries to analyze the alienated phenomenon by adopting alienation theory. First it will show a theoretical introduction to alienation, then elaborate Lawrence’s view of alienation in the context of modernism. Next it will study four types of alienation in The Rainbow. Finally it discusses two artistic devices which are contributed to the alienation theme.2. A theoretical introduction to alienationThe English term alienation is derived from the Latin term alientio and alienare. It has the ideas of estrangement of madness, a state of depersonalization and sense of being controlled. In the capitalist society, the alienation phenomenon is mon. Karl Marx observed that phenomenon sufficiently in his “Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844” and formed this famous Alienated Labor theory. This alienation concept is also revealed in modern western literature like the works of William Golding and Franz Kafka. In order to provide more precise information and theoretical basis for the analysis of alienation in The Rainbow, this part explores the concept of alienation by focusing on the following representatives: Marx, Hemingway and Kafka. Alienated Labor in Marx’s theoryIn 1932, Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 was published. This book expresses Marx’s Alienated Labor theory. In the “Manuscripts”, Marx thinks that alienation refers to the object created by labour as a power independent of the producer and as an alien essence opposed to man. He reveals alienation’s traits mainly from four aspects. The first aspect is the alienation of labor products. It is the most direct manifestation of alienation. As the product of labor, Labor products should belong to laborers. But these labor products belong to capitalists who don’t work. Thus, the worker will be poorer and poorer as the labor products and wealth which they create bee more and more. Just as Marx puts it, “the object produced by labor, that
