Most people just regard him as a politician or a militarist。 actually he also is a poet. Mao Zedong poems have unique appeal, which is attributed to the unique linguistic beauty in Mao Zedong poems. Boldness amp。 unrestrainedness and subtleness amp。 restrainedness are patible in Mao Zedong poems, which testify Mao’s linguistic beauty. (Zhang 20xx) Mao’s poems are the priceless treasure in the long Chinese classical literature works, which are difficult to be translated. Therefore, it is significant for a translator to find an effective method to translate these poems. Professor Xu Yuanchong, who devoted all his life to translation field with so much contribution and respect, who summarizes a series of translation theories that can not only make himself pleased but others fortable in the long English poetry practices. It is the holy aim of creating and spreading beauty when doing translations. Owing to the exploration and pursuit of the beauty, Xu proposes “Three Beauties”, the translation thoughts of who are fully reflected in ChineseEnglish Version of Selected Poems of Mao Zedong. Since 1940s, Mao39。s poems have been translated into many 2 versions. In this paper, the author selects Xu Yuanchong translate version of Mao’s poems and makes a careful study of the translations on images. And use “Three beauties” theory in three aspects to analysis the available way of images translation. This paper is pleted with two purposes. Firstly, the author would like to show the importance of images in poetry translation. As is known to all, poetry is a special literal form of ancient China. A good translation can not only help foreign reader to understand the deep meaning it contented, but also led people into a totally different culture. So image is the key of poetry translation. Secondly, the “Three Beauties” theory which proposed by Xu Yuanchong has been widely use in poetry translation. Based on this theory the author prefers to offer an effective method and to open a new window to the foreigners to present the charm of Chinese classical poetry and to internationalize it. Mao Zedong bines the romantic style with the spirit on realism and hardships of farmers successfully. It is not easy to exhibit the images in Mao’s poems. Among so many different version of Mao Zedong’s poem translation, Xu Yuanchong did the best in translating the sense, sound and form. Because of his talent translation, the unusual of Mao Zedong’s poem has been realized by many foreigners. Xu proposed “Three Beauties” theory, which means beauty is sense, beauty in sound and beauty in form. This theory offered a basic stand of poetry translation and also helps reader to appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese poetry. The bases of “Three beauties” theory are “Three Similarities”, which means sense similar, sound similar and form similar.(Xu 1982) This theory require translator properly express the original meaning of the poetry. Guided by this theory, the author would do some deep research on poetry translation. Moreover, the author hopes to give some proposals to other translators and readers. According to the research, the author summarizes some translation methods can better show the beauty of sound, sense and form. For translating sense, literaltranslating method, meaningtranslation method and transliteration are often be used to convey the meaning. Another special way is when translating cultural image or allusion translator sometimes need add note for it, which can help readers to better 3 understand the cultural meaning. As for sound, some classical Chinese poems are using end rhyme or repetition because it is easy to read than other poems. To show the beauty in form, a mon way is to imitate the original form, but a special way is to change the poem in to the innovative structure. That can help the image to better convey the majestic momentum. To reach the goal of image transforming, and show the beauty of the poetry, translation methods are very important. The introduction briefly introducing Mao’s poems and “Three Beauties” theory and the following part mainly introducing the image features and some theory about image. Next part summarizes the features of Mao Zedong’s poem. After that, illustrate the reproduction of three beauties in the images together with the main method of realizing the three beauties. The last part summarizes the previous contents, some limitations and the future study goals. 4 2 Image in Poetry A foreign writer once said “prose is words in the best order。 poetry is the best words in the best order.” (Lefevere 4)Poetry is a literary form which uses little words to express their feeling, so every word in the poetry is equally important. No matter it is Chinese poetry or English poetry, two issues are necessary, one is strong rhymes, and the other is strong feelings.
