Lesson91 Three men in a basket 三人同籃 A pi lot noticed a bal oon which seemed to be making f or a Royal Ai r Force Station nearby. He coul d make out three men in a basket under it and one of them was hol ding fi el d gl asses. When the bal oon was over the station, t he pil ot saw one of the men taki ng phot ogr aphs. Soon af terwards, the bal loon began to descend and it l anded near an air fi eld. The police wer e cal ed i n, but they could not arest anyone, for the basket cont ai ned two Member s of Par li ament and t he Commanding Of icer of the stati on! As the Commandi ng Of ficer expl ai ned later, one half of the station did not know what he other half was doi ng ! Lesson93 A noble gift 崇高的禮物 One of t he most f amous monuments i n the wor ld, t he Statue of Li bert y, was presented to t he Unit ed States of Ameri ca in t he nieenth centur y by t he people of Fr ance. The great statue, which was designed by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, took ten year s to plete. The act ual figure was made of copper suppor ted by a metal framewor k whi ch had been especi al ly constructed by Eif fel. By 1884, a st atue which was 151 f et tal, had been erect ed i n Par is. The following year, it was t aken to pieces and sent t o Amer ica. By the end of Oct ober 1886, the st atue had been put t ogether again and i t was offi ci al ly presented to the Amer ican people by Bartholdi. Ever since then, the gr eat monument has been a symbol of l iber ty for the mil lions of people who have pased t hr ough New Yor k Har bour t o make their homes in America.
