【正文】 Godshill C. The Bay Hotel& Willapark Manor Hotel D. Willapark Manor Hotel amp。 The Country Garden Hotel B I was very glad that my friend Jennifer was going to be at my school! I was convinced that we would be best buds. She introduced me to her friend Amy and we had lots of fun together. But things started to change. Jennifer wanted to be the leader of our little group. She was controlling, and I couldn39。t make new friends. If so, she would decide that I was mad at her. Pretty soon being Jennifer39。s friend was a struggle. I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after class, but sometimes when they left, they39。d walk right past me as if they couldn39。t even see me. We often gossiped about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. She had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy, and about me, I guess I had changedI became moody, depressed, and lonely. I spent days trying not to cry. I felt so left out. Finally, something snapped. I was sick of having to battle for friends hip. I stopped sitting with Jennifer at lunch and waiting for her after class. Jennifer quickly announced I was mad at her. I said, I39。m not mad, I just want to make more friends. But with Jennifer, it was all or nothing, and she was convinced I was mad at her. So boom, our friendship fell to pieces. It was tough at first, but I found many girls whom Jennifer had classified as moody or mean ” to be the sweetest , friendliest people in the world. Now, I have tons of friends. They support me when I am sad, and I support them. We have fun together and I love them all. It amazes me how easy our friendship is. There is no struggling to be on topwe are all equal. It doesn39。t matter to me if two of them walk away or buy friendship necklaces together. It doesn39。t hurt my feelings or make me feel alone. I lost a friend, but I am a happier person now. 24. The writer thought Jennifer_________. A. far too outstanding to match B. too selfcentered C. rather annoying and dull D. the right one to make friends with 25. What does the expression something snapped mean? A. The writer and Jennifer broke up. B. The writer and Jennifer hated each other. C. Jennifer treated the writer worse. D. The writer felt mad about losing Jennifer. 26. The writer decided to break up with Jennifer because_________. A. Jennifer spoke ill of her behind her back B. Jennifer had hurt her feelings C. she had made other friends D. other girls were sweeter and friendlier than Jennifer 27. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The writer now regrets losing her friend Jennifer. B. The writer still gets upset when left out occasionally. C. The writer enjoys more than just one friendship. D. The writer39。s new friends are all moody and mean. C We know the word tolerance is widely used in liberal democracies(自由民主 ). It indicates a positive meaning. Politicians urge us to be tolerant towards minorities. Educators teach us to be tolerant towards the others. The press is full of references to the need to display tolerance when faced with individuals or groups espousing(擁護(hù) ) a different view or holding a different religious belief. A tolerant society is an objective sought after by anyone who believes in the values of democracy. A tolerant individual is attributed(認(rèn)為 …… 是 ) with virtuous qualities. The question we must ask is whether we have been using the word tolerance fully aware of its meaning and whether we have applied it correctly to reflect what we really wish to convey. The word tolerance means to bear, or to bear with. If I tolerate something or someone, I basically say that I am ready to bear it or him. I can tolerate a bad smell or a noisy neighbour. The act of toleration forces me to desist from conveying my objection to the existence of a phenomenon, which I find difficult to bear. A bad smell or a noisy neighbour is considered by me to be an objectionable phenomenon. By tolerating either of them, I am not transforming the bad smell or the noisy neighbour into positive phenomena. Let39。s be honest: I don39。t have a different taste when it es to bad smells. I simply dislike it and wish that it disappears. I don39。t respect the noisy neighbour. I would rather have him stop at once the noise he is making so I can live in peace. A tolerant attitude involves the grant(授給物 ) of a favour, not a right. The question we should ask ourselves is whether we would ever wish a parliament(議會 ) to make laws according to certain actions interpreted as a favour rather than a right? Indeed, would we ever wish anyone to listen to our views and accept us the way we are simply because he is kind enough to tolerate us? 28. The first two paragraphs are mainly intended to show that __________. A. tolerance is a symbol of liberal democracies B. tolerance can be applied to many situations C. democratic society always advocates tolerance D. people’s understanding of tolerance is onesided 29. The underlined part “desist from” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “________’. A. stop B. dislike C. deny D. keep 30. The example of a bad smell and a noisy neighbour is raised to indicate that _________. A. the writer are fed up with them B. most people find them hard to tolerate C. the writer isn’t prejudiced against them D. tolerating them isn’t a virtuous act 31. The best titl e for this passage should be “___________”. A. Tolerance and respect B. What is to be tolerated? C. Is Tolerance a Virtue? D. Should people be tolerant? D Do you often take exercise? Exercise may help to safeguard the mind against depression(沮喪 ) through previously unknown effects on working muscles,
