The quake occurred at 5:26 AM (Iran Standard Time). Its epicenter（震中） was roughly 10 kilometres southwest of the ancient city of Bam. Maximum intensities were at Bam and Baravat, an important regional center during the 16th and 17th centuries. About 30,000 people were killed in the quake— nearly a third of the city’s population.
