Death of a Salesman, his masterpiece, wins him international reputation. Many critics have confined their critiques to the language and structure. But this thesis tries to study the play from three aspects: stage design, characterization and plotting. In Chapter 1, it analyses the stage scenery which transcends the boundaries of time and space, the stage lighting and music, creating a sense of unreality and implying different characters and situations. In Chapter 2, it discusses Arthur Miller?s masterful approach to construct Willy and Ben?s character features via the writing technique of multiple personality disorder and dramatic fantasy while Chapter 3 emphasizes his virtuosity in the spatiotemporal shifts and psychological externalization. All in all, the study of abovementioned aspects is intended to illustrate the eternal enchantment of Death of a Salesman. At the University of Michigan, he became conscious of German Expressionism, August Strindberg, and Henrik Ibsen, and began to delve into plays. He died in Connecticut on February 10, 2020. Arthur Miller?s early Broadway plays include The Man Who Had All the Luck (1944), which earned him a Theater Guild award, All My Sons (1947), which gained the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and Death of a Salesman (1949), his masterpiece.
