H ave you ever dream ed of pl ayi ng in front of thousands of people at a concert, at whi ch everyone is cl api ng and appreci ating your musi c? Do you si ng Karaoke and pretend you are a famous singer l ike Song Zuying or Liu H uan? To be honest, a l ot of people attach great importance to being ri ch and famous. But just now do people form a band? Many musi ci ans meet and form a band because they l ike to wri te and pl ay their own may start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practi sing thei r music in someone’s house is the fi rst step to fam e. Sometim es they may pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn some extra money for themsel ves or to pay for their i nstruments. Later they m ay give performances in pubs or clubs, for which they are paid i n cash. Of course they hope to m ake records i n a studio and sel mi l ions of copi es to bee m il lionai res! However, there was one band that started i n a different way. It was caled the Monkees and began as a TV show. The musici ans were to play jokes on each other as wel as pl ay music, most of which was based loosely on the Beatles. The TV ani zer had planned to fi nd four musici ans who could act as wel l as si ng. They put an adverti sement in a newspaper looking for rock m usi cians, but they coul d onl y find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not si ng wel enough, they had to rel y on other m usi cians to hel p them . So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow thei r perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that thei r fans form ed cl ubs i n order to get m ore fam il iar wi th them. Each week on TV, the Monkees woul d pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other m usici ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng thei r own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced their own records and started touri ng and pl ayi ng their own musi c. In the USA they becam e even m ore popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even m ore records. The band broke up about 1970, but happi ly they reuni ted in the m i d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th which they cel ebrated thei r form er tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) Not l ong after Freddy and the band becam e famous, they visited Bri tai n on a brief tour. Fans showed thei r devotion by waiting for hours to get ti ckets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now quite confident when he went i nto a concert hal l. H e enjoyed si nging and al l the congratulations afterwards! Hi s most exci ti ng i nvi tati on was to perform on a TV programme cal led “ Top of pops “. He had to go to London, wear an expensive suit and give a performance to a TV camera. It felt very strange. But as son as the programm e was over, the telephones which were in the same room started ringi ng. Everybody was asking when they coul d see Freddy and his band agai n. They were truly stars. Then things went wrong. Freddy and his band could not go out anywhere without being fol lowed. Even when they wore sungl ases or beards people recogni zed them. Fans found them even when they went into toil et. They tri ed to hi de i n the reading room s of l ibraries, but it was useless. Someone was al ways there! Their personal li fe was regularly discused by people who did not know them but tal ked as i f they close fri ends. At last feeli ng very upset and sensi ti ve, Freddy and his band real ized that they m ust leave the country before i t became too pai nful for them.
