Unit 5 The band that wasn’t Have you ever wanted to be part of a band as a fam ous singer or musi ci ans? Have you ever dreamed of playing i n front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at which everyone i s clapping and apreciating your music? Do you sing Karaoke and pretend you are a fam ous si nger li ke Song Zuyi ng or Li u Huan? To be honest, a lot of people atach great i mportance to bei ng rich and famous. But just now do peopl e form a band? Many musicians meet and form a band because they li ke to write and play their own musi c. They may start as a group of highschool students, for whom practisi ng their musi c i n someone’s house is the first step to fame. Someti mes they may pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn som e extra money for themsel ves or to pay for their i nstruments. Later they m ay give performances in pubs or clubs, for which they are pai d i n cash. Of course they hope to m ake records i n a studio and sel mi l ions of copi es to bee m il ionaires! However, there was one band that started i n a different way. It was cal led the Monkees and began as a TV show. The musici ans were to play jokes on each other as wel as pl ay music, most of whi ch was based loosely on the Beatl es. The TV ani zer had planned to fi nd four musici ans who could act as wel as si ng. They put an adverti sem ent in a newspaper looking for rock m usi cians, but they coul d onl y find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three mem bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not sing wel enough, they had to rely on other musicians to hel p them. So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow their perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that thei r fans form ed cl ubs in order to get m ore fam il i ar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees woul d pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other m usi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng thei r own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touri ng and pl ayi ng thei r own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even m ore popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even more records. The band broke up about 1970, but happi l y they reuni ted i n the mi d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated thei r form er tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog（Ⅱ） N ot l ong after Freddy and the band becam e fam ous, they vi si ted Britai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by wai ti ng for hours to get ti ckets for their concerts . Freddy was now qui te confi dent when he went into a concert hal . He enjoyed singing and al the congratul ati ons afterwards! H is m ost exciting i nvitation was to perform on a TV programm e cal ed “ Top of pops “. H e had to go to London, wear an expensi ve sui t and gi ve a perform ance to a TV camera. It fel t very strange. But as soon as the programme was over, the telephones whi ch were i n the same rom started ri nging. Everybody was aski ng when they could see Freddy and hi s band again. They were truly stars. Then things went wrong. Freddy and hi s band could not go out anywhere wi thout bei ng fol owed. Even when they wore sunglasses or beards peopl e recogni zed them. Fans found them even when they went i nto toi let. They tried to hide in the readi ng room s of l ibraries, but it was useless. Som eone was always there! Their personal li fe was regularly di scussed by peopl e who did not know them but tal ked as i f they cl ose fri ends. At last feeli ng very upset and sensi tive, Fredy and his band realized that they must leave the country before it became to painful for them .
