Introduction Written in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’ s The Great Gatsby is often referred to as “ The Great American Novel” and as the quintessential work which captures the mood of the “ Jazz Age” . Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and educated at Princeton, although he dropped out to join the army before he pleted his degree. Stationed near Montgomery, Alabama, he met and later married Zelda Sayre, a highstrung woman from a family more prominent than his own. His first novel, This Side of Paradise, published in 1920, was a tremendous critical and mercial success. Fitzgerald followed with The Beautiful and the Damned in 1922, The Great Gatsby in 1925, Tender is the Night (1934), and was working on The Last Tycoon (1941) when he died, in Hollywood, in 1940. Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was not a great success during his lifetime, but became a smash hit after his death, especially after World War II. It has since bee a staple of the canon of American literature, and is taught at many high schools and universities across the country and the world. Organized crime enters the picture through the backdoor with Jay Gatsby. Everybody suspects him, but everybody is willing to partake in his lavish parties anyway. The life of ease and luxury is contrasted sharply with the stranglehold of poverty containing Myrtle and Gee Wilson or the life from which Jay Gatsby emerged. It is also interesting to note that Gee Wilson is the only one who mentions God in the text: religion is notoriously absent from the upper crust’ s sensibilities. There are two more important contrasts to keep in mind if you want to talk about the geographical setting in The Great Gatsby. The first is the whole East Egg/West Egg thing. Nick tells us right off the bat that East Egg is the wealthier, more elite of the two. Despite all his money, Gatsby lives in West Egg, suggesting that he has not been able to plete his transformation into a member of the social elite. The distance that separates him from Daisy lies across the span of water between their housesthe very distance between West Egg and East Egg. The barrier between them, then, is one of class distinctions. The second contrast is between the city scenes and the suburban ones. Like Nick Carraway, Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby mute into the city for their respective lines of work. The women are left behind. This geographical divide is also a gender borderline. Nick agrees and invites Daisy and Gatsby to his house. The reunion is initially awkward but Gatsby and Daisy begin a love affair. An affair also begins for Nick and Jordan but Nick predicts their relationship will be superficial. Daisy invites Gatsby and Nick to her mansion, where Tom discovers that Gatsby loves Daisy, acpanied by Nick and Jordan they depart for the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Tom insists he and Gatsby switch cars, as he stops by Wilson39。s roadster. At the hotel Tom confronts Gatsby about their affair. Gatsby urges Daisy to say she never loved
