This should be performed at least once a year. Moreover a meticulous cleaning of the parts will make the diaphragm pump be more efficient. By this way the efficiency of the molecular pump is guaranteed, as well as the lifetime of that pump. Therefore a special attention must be done to the maintenance steps of the diaphragm pump. The kit of parts can be obtained by ARL.The pump has four heads, two on the top, and two on the bottom. The following procedure describes the directions for the two top heads. You repeat the same directions for the two bottom heads.Unplug the pump, remove the vacuum pipe, take the pump outside the instrument and put it on a table or a workbench.During the membranes replacement, it is highly remended to proceed by the dismounting and mounting back of the membranes one after the other, in order to prevent from mixing the parts of a subassembly with another one, particularly for the possible wedging washers.1 Dismounting and Cleaning the HeadsHold the banjo with a 16 mm wrench and release the upper connector with a 14 mm wrench, as shown on thenext figure.Figure 1Do the same for the lower connector (this is not essential, but it may ease handlings).Unscrew the 6 M6 screws of the crankcase cover. Remove carefully the crankcase cover. Separate the head cover from the crankcase cover and take care to mark them.Remove and throw away the valves. Take care to position the airtight part of the membrane to the side of the fastening disk.Lift up two opposite sides of the membrane so as to be able to insert the fastening disk / membrane / support disk subassembly inside the membrane key, as shown on the next figure.Figure 5Take care to not scratch the airtight side of the membrane during this operation.Put back the possible marked wedging washer on the connecting rod. Put back the heads cover with valves in her casing in the crankcase.Keep rigorously their position, as shown on the next figure.Figure 6Put back the crankcase cover by shaking it a little bit in order to ensure that the heads cover are properly engaged.Screw very lightly up to the contact the 6 M6 screws, and then tighten progressively diagonally.
