【正文】 teness, no matter open, close, or move between the fingers. How nimble they are! In front of these ladies, any a magician may suffer an eclipse.” (Lian, 2005) Taboos of GestureGesture is the most significant pose in body language and the necessary tool of munication. Around the world, gesture is plenty that diverse from cultural background and gives different connotations. Generally speaking, nations of south Europe as Italy, Spain, and Greece are the most frequent and exaggerate to use gesture。 nations of far northern take third, because few gestures are used to municate with each other (Xia and Zhang, 2003). Thereby, using gesture should be quite careful otherwise taboo is easily made. WavingChinese and American all have gesture to wave people to e, but people can be misunderstood by each gesture for which suggests different connotations. When Chinese wave someone to e, they often stretch out their arm, palm down, and the hand swing up and down, back and forth while westerners think this action seem to tell them pejoratively to go away。 some were in a daze with popeyed。 give their regards to others by waving or shaking hands even tapping each other’s back when friends met again for a long time. With a stronger emotional coloring and cultural characteristics, body touching must be have a better understanding and being treated prudently to know clearly what can do and what cannot. Once mismanagement, it can give rise to an embarrassment or offence. Touching with Stringers’ Body There are still difference though China and some English countries belong to lowcontact culture. In Britain and America, even in a crowded elevator, mutual body contact is not allowed and once people touch each other a little unconsciously, they may say “excuse me” or “sorry” to apologize for it(Pan,2005). For they emphasize a basic principle that brooking no violation of a private space. Yet China, with large population, has a little attention to private space so that they can take lenient and understanding attitude toward it though they as well as feel unfortable sometimes. For instance, anyone needs to say sorry if you jam into the crowded bus like sardine fishes can, when you go to work every day morning. Touching with Bodies of the Same SexIn English country, males and females all have a habit of hugging and kissing each other in meeting or greeting. Chinese do the same act only with their lover or wife in privacy so that they can’t bear this touching. Furthermore, in China, those of the same sex can touch each other causally but enjoin from those of the opposite sex which is just like the saying goes, in accordance with Confucian rules of etiquette, “In giving and receiving, man and woman should not touch each other”. However, in America, physical contacts especially between young people of the same sex are under an embargo because that can result in behaviors of homosexual including handing in hand with each other, putting an arm round one’s shoulder and hugging each other, etc. yet those body touching of the opposite sex can be considered the first law of nature. Touching with Children’s BodyIn addition, Chinese think touch with children’s bodies of friends or neighbors is hail fellow well met and people pat children’s heads slightly or hugging them, showing friendly. Chinese like to touch his/her forehead or face lightly to show their kindness and gladness when they see a child from the west from time to time. In the contrary, it can pass for an impolite act in western, because only with an intimate relationship like members of family and close friends can do it, or parents will feel unfortable for the act (Xia and Zhang, 2003).4. ConclusionWith the increasing munication between China and western countries, we should strengthen the intercultural municative petence that includes not only language municative ability but body language municative petence. In term of the above parisons and analysis of this paper, we can see that in crosscultural munication, body language is an indispensable part of human munication which even plays a more important role than language, so taboos in body language between China and west is an unavoidable issue. There is an old saying: “ask about taboos and bans upon arrival in a foreign country。 learn about its taboos on going to a friend’s house.”(Dai, 2007) In order to keep crosscultural munication successfully, we have to understand differences of body language in different culture, especially to understand the culture of different body language taboos. Only in this way, can we reduce and avoid the embarrassment brought by the body language of cultural differences in the intercultural munication. It follows that we should not only pay attention to language teaching but also body language teaching in China’s foreign language teaching. Through the way of watching foreign TVs, movies and reading literature to observe body language behavior of westerners, to pare and analyze of the differences between Chinese and westerner’s body language so that we can know taboos in body language of different countries and nations and enhance the students’ intercultural munication petence.References[1] Carley H.
