e earthquake destroys side slope, roadbed, and pavement of highroad, impacts normal operating system of transportation in the disaster region, and increases the difficulty of postdisaster rescue work. Therefore, it is of important engineering significance to study the mechanism of damages along roadbed occurred in earthquake and to put forward the countermeasures for highway construction in plain country. Based on historical data and field investigation, Earthquake damages along roadbed in plain country are sorted. Some mon types of earthquake damage along roadbed in plain country are ground collapse, seismic liquidation, ground fracture and destabilization of side slope. Applying principle of effective stress and Coulomb theory of strength, mechanism of Earthquake damages is studied. Through the investigation and analyses, some conclusions can be got: 1) Earthquake induces increasing of excess hydrostatic pressure, which could reduce the effective stress in soil and weak the strength of soil。 3) and the damage ing from vertical earthquake force should not be ignored, it is as important as the vertical one. At last, some suggestions are put forward against Earthquake damages along roadbed in plain country. Proper selection of highway route, meticulous construction and good quality are strong guarantees of highway munication in seismic region. The results of this paper can be used as a reference in highway design and construction in extensive plain country.
