C Endangered Mexican howler monkeys are one of the loudest land animals on the earth because of their call that can be heard for three miles. But the species finds it increasingly difficult to find food as a result of human’s destroying the forests. Research carried out by Cambridge University found that the limited population left in Mexico are taking longer to find fruits to eat. Dr Jacob Dunn, a biological anthropologist who carried out the research, said the lack of food increases stress levels, which reduces chances of reproduction (繁衍 ). As forests are destroyed, the monkeys bee cut off and isolated on forest islands that increasingly lack the fruits which provide an important ponent of their natural diet. This has led to the monkeys spending ever more time and effort seeking for food, often increasing leaf consumption when their search is, quite literally, fruitless. The traditional view was that the leaves exploited by howler monkeys were an abundant food sourcebut this is not the case. The monkeys rely much more heavily on fruits than previously believed, and when turning to leaves for food, they have to be highly selective in the leaves they consume, visiting lots of different trees. This leads to the increased “travel time” and consequent high levels of stress we are seeing in these animals with their habitats destroyed. The research took place in the tropical rainforests of the Mexican state of Veracruzwhich are being cutting down and burning by human activity. The monkeys are consuming more leaves and less fruits as a result of the deforestation (砍伐森林 ) of the tropical rainforests where they live. Many of these leaves are difficult to digest and can be filled with toxins, forcing the monkeys to spend more time seeking out the right leaves to eat. It is the time spent searching— and the stress that it causes the animals— that could potentially lead to the Mexican howler monkeys being dying out. The study proves that stress because of lack of food causes animals to reproduce less. This could mean many other primate (靈長類的 ) species are in danger from deforestation caused by humans. 28. Why does the birth rate of the howler monkeys decline? A. The base number of their population is bigger than before. B. They face more pressure from finding enough food. C. Their diet is changing due to climate changes. D. They can not sleep well due to less forest, 29. What belief did people previously hold about the howlers? A.
