hat is attractive and interesting. Because the students’ learning approaches usually rely on interests, curiosities and motivations. Thus, the activities designed in accordance with students’ interests in study can in a large scale help to arouse the interest of those students who used to have less motivation to English learning. The roles of the teacher in the activitiesIn the teaching and learning activities, the role of the teacher is considered to be an important ponent of efficient classroom management. However, as Richards and Rodgers point out, the teacher’s roles are related ultimately to assumptions about language and language learning at the level of approach (1986). Teacher’s roles are regarded as part of the design of an approach. In the cooperative learning methodology in English teaching in high school, the role of the teacher is a factor that should be taken into consideration. Harmer defines the teacher’s roles as controller, assessor, organizer, prompter, participant and resourceprovider( see Wang Qiang, 2000). It is somewhat the same as the teacher’s roles in cooperative learning activities. Before the activities, the teacher plays the first role as a planner, who plans what to teach, how to teach, and what result to achieve in the lesson planning, especially plans what cooperative activities to design and how the activities to go smoothly. The teacher acts as the initiator of activities, so the teacher should explain what group forms students can use, the requirements for them in the activities and some notes in cooperative learning. The following explanation of the task shows this role:The whole class is divided into 5 groups and there are 10 members in each group. Five minutes of the beginning of each class, one student of a group is required to make a small presentation. Five English classes each week, so five students from five groups. You can choose various topics to do the performance such as the news from home and abroad or our school, a story, a wonderful passage or even personal feeling about life or study…. What needs to be noticed is that each member in the group should have a chance to participate the preclass activity. You should supervise each other in a group. We will see which group has done the best performance. Therefore, the task can be clearly defined. The teacher as the initiator creates some clear rubrics (tips) at the beginning of every task so that use these for guiding the whole cooperative learning process and for assessing students’ work.In the process of preparing for the cooperative learning activity, if students meet some problems that they can not handle, or not sure how to start the activity or what to do next, or what to say next, the teachers can help students to make preparation to finish activity smoothly. So the teacher is in another character of the guide, or the consultant.Certainly, meantime, the teacher can give some appropriate prompts as a prompter. For instance, when the task is about how to plan a traveling, the teacher can give some tips such as the destination, transportation, the cost. Thus, the mediation helps students figure out what to do when they are stumped and helps them learn how to learn after all.The teacher bees an organizer, whose major responsibility is to design and organize tasks that related to the context of books knowledge and what activities are appropriate for students to carry out in the class. That is to say, the teacher should find something improper or wrong based on his or her own knowledge and experience in the course of implementation of cooperative activities.Without question, the teacher should play the role of an assessor. According to Harmer (1983), as an assessor, the teacher does two things, which is correcting mistakes and organizing feedback (see Wang Qiang, 2000). During the activities, the teacher should make gentle correction when students make mistakes and not make critical assessment. The teacher can focus on the students’ success or progress by using different assessments such as selfassessment, process assessment to help students to see how they are doing in the activities and make improvement. In the cooperative learning activities in high school, the teacher is certainly an indispensable role. Only when the teacher roles are brought into play properly can we achieve effective result on classroom management and English teaching by conducting cooperative learning activities.5. Assessment of Cooperative Learning activitiesAssessment in ELT means to discover what the learners know and can do at a certain stage of the learning process. It based on a collection of information about what students know and can do. Assessment is necessary for ELT. Teachers need to know what has been done and what needs to be done next。Newman(1990), cooperative learning is “an activity involving a small group of students who work together as a team to solve a problem, plete a task, and acplish a mon goal.” Davison defined it as “a task for group discussion and resolution (if possible), requiring facetoface interaction, an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual helpfulness and individual accountability” (Davison, 1990). Cooperative learning is also regarded as “the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning” (Johnson and Johnson and Smith, 1991). New Curriculum embodies a new educational concept. It highlights the studentcentered education, places stress on nurturing students’ integrated application on language skills to reflect the objective and practicality of language learning. It also fully embodies the educational idea of “offer an individualized quality education for every student” and “for all students”.In view of the existing traditional education situation, under which the teacher’s leading role is overstressed and students memorize knowledge with mechanism but not with understanding. “The New C
