IntroductionLanguage is a tool of human munication. The ultimate goal of English teaching is to develop students’ municative petence. Obviously, training students to municate in English should be the main task of English teachers. Widdoson (1978), a representative of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), points out that the concentration of foreign language teaching must be transferred from teaching language system into teaching students how to use language to municate.Within the last quarter of the 20th century, CLT had been put forth around the world as the new or innovative way to teach English as second or foreign language. CLT was introduced in China in the early 1980s. It has been greatly concerned by our foreign language experts since then. There have been a series of discussions and researches on the possibility of the adaptation of CLT in the general situation of foreign language education in China. According to those discussions and researches, some methods for designing and carrying out municative language teaching are generated. CLT has been considered as an innovative approach in foreign language teaching.However, the result of concrete application of CLT has not been very satisfactory. This thesis attempts to explore the problems that hinder the effective application of CLT in English teaching in middle school in China and aims at making some suggestions on how to solve the problems and on how to apply CLT effectively.2. The problems in applying CLT in Chinese middle school and misinterpretations of CLTIt is inevitable to encounter some obstacles in the application of a teaching approach. China has its own characteristics which are different from other countries. In order to apply CLT effectively, we should be aware of the problems in applying CLT. According to the current situation of English teaching in Chinese middle school, problems are listed as follows: Limitation of students’ oral English Middle school students have learned a limited vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, which makes it difficult for them to express themselves. This is a big obstacle for municative classroom construction. Some of the students may be selfconfident and active in class while more others may withdraw. AbstractCommunicative Language Teaching (CLT) was founded by British linguist, . Wilkins in 1970s. In near thirty years, it has developed to be a leading approach and theory in foreign language teaching all over the world. It has been more than twenty years since the introduction of CLT in China. Communicative Language Teaching has bee the main trend in foreign language teaching. However, there are still some obstacles in the application of CLT. It is mainly due to the incorrect prehension towards CLT and some negative factors in classroom teaching, as well as national examination system. In consideration of the misinterpretations and negative factors, this thesis tries to analyze the elements that hinder the effective application of CLT. The elements include the teacher, students, classroom organization, national education system, etc. There are two extreme treatments towards CLT. One is that CLT does not need grammar。 the other is that CLT stresses oral English only. To gain a better understanding of CLT, the thesis discusses it ranging from its development, characteristics, to its principles. Then the writer gives some suggestions according to the current situation of English teaching in our country. Language is a tool of human munication.
