The stubborn Afri can In 1968 a Kenyan athl ete Ki p Keino peted i n the 1500 m etres runi ng race. At that tim e he was very il l and i n great pai n. Although he had reached the standard for the fi nal of the race he deci ded at fi rst not to take part. H owever, just before the race was goi ng to start he changed hi s mi nd. H e ran from hi s room and arri ved at the race track a few m i nutes before the race was about to begi n. Surprisi ngl y, he won the race, fini shi ng wel ahead of everyone el se and showing what true courage and perseverance can achi eve. It was no wonder that Ki p Kei no becam e the onl y Kenyan sportsman ever to appear on the cover of the worl d fam ous sports m agazi ne Sports i l ustrated. Uni t 3 WHO AM I? O ver tim e I have changed quite a l ot. I began as a cal cul ati ng machi ne in France i n 1642. Al though I was young I coul d sim pli fy di fi cul t sum s. I devel oped very slowly and it tok nearl y two hundred years before I was bui lt as an anal ytical machine by Charl es Baggage. After I was programmed by an operator who used cards with holes,I coul d ―thing‖l ogical y and produce an answer quicker than any person. At that time it was considered a technological revolution and the start of my ―artifical intel igence‖. In 1936 my real father,Al an Turing,wrote a book about how I coul d be made to work as a ―universal machine‖to solve any difficult mathematical probl then on, I grew rapi dly both i n si ze and i n the 1940s I hd grownas l arge as a room , and I wonderes if I would grow journey on March 18th , 2020 to find out about the presentday O lym pi c Gam es. There are two m ain sets of Gam es—the Wi nter and the Sum mer O lym pi cs, and both are hel d every four years on a regul ar basi s. The Wi nter Ol ym pics are usual y hel d two years before the Summ er Gam es. O nly athl etes who have reached the agreed standard for thei r event wil l be admi tted as petitors. They m ay e from anywhere in the worl d. P: Wi nter Gam es? H ow can the runners enjoy peti ng i n wi nter? And what about the horses? L: O h no! There are no runni ng races or horse ri di ng events. Instead there are petiti ons l i ke ski i ng and i ce skati ng which need snow and i ce. That’s why they’re cal ed the Wi nter O lym pi cs. It’s i n the Sum mer Ol ym pi cs that you have the runni ng races, together with swi mmi ng, sai li ng and al the team sports. P: I see. Earl ier you sai d that athl etes are i nvi ted from al over the worl d. Do you m ean the Greek worl d? O ur Greek ci ti es used to pete agai nst each other just for the honour of wi ni ng. N o other countries coul d joi n i n, nor coul d sl aves or wom en! L: N owadays any country can take part i f thei r athl etes are good enough. There are over 250 sports and each one has its own standard. Wom en are not onl y al lowed, but pl ay a very im portant role i n gym nasti cs, athl etics, team sports and … P: Pl ease wai t a m i nute! L: For each O l ym pi cs, a speci al vi l age i s bui l t for them to l i ve i n, a m ai n recepti on buil di ng, several stadi ums for peti ti ons, and a gym nasi um as wel . P: That’s sounds very expansive. Does anyone want to host the Ol ym pi c Gam es? L: As a m atter of fact, every country wants the oportuni ty.
