They donamp。t know what classes to take, or how to prepare for the SAT or the ACT. No one helpsthem decide which colleges to apply to. No one reviews their applications. And plenty of kidshave no idea that theyamp。re eligible for financial aid, so they assume they just canamp。t afford college, and they donamp。t even bother to apply. Now, thatamp。s one world. The other world is much smaller amp。 itamp。s a world of schools where thequestion isnamp。t where students are going to college, but amp。 or whether theyamp。re going to college, but where. Kids in this world start preparing for college long before they even start high from the first day of freshman year, theyamp。ve been shepherded through every step of theprocess. Theyamp。ve got SAT and ACT prep courses, they take those tests again and again toimprove their scores. Counselors have much smaller caseloads, and they walk kids throughevery deadline, they edit every draft of their essays. Honestly, when Barack and I talk aboutthis, we look at the kind of college counseling many of the kids are getting today and we wonderhow we ever managed to get ourselves into college. Theyamp。re getting the students whocan best afford to succeed in this system. And we are leaving behind so many bright, hungry, promisefilled kids. We are depriving ourselves of so much human potential in this country amp。from the scientific discoveries these kids might make, to the businesses that they might build,to the leadership that they might one day show in our munities. Weamp。re missing all of that. Weamp。re also losing all of that simply because we arenamp。t making the basicinvestment in their future today, and thatamp。s a tragedy. Itamp。s a tragedy for our country. Itamp。s atragedy for those kids and for their families, because we all know amp。 we know amp。 that if you wantto secure a decentpaying job in todayamp。s economy, a high school diploma simply isnamp。t enough. So unlike 40 or 50 years ago, higher education is no longer just for kids in the top quarter orthe top half of the class, it has to be for everyone. So we are going to need a collegecounselingsystem that reflects this new rea
