【正文】 Daisy says that although she did love Tom once she loved Gatsby too. Tom mockingly tells Gatsby nothing can happen between him and Daisy. Gatsby retorts that the reason Daisy married Tom was because he (Gatsby) was too poor to marry Daisy. Tom visibly loses posure and reveals that Gatsby is a bootlegger. Gatsby tries to defend himself to Daisy. Tom knows Daisy’ s materialistic nature and by taking away Gatsby’ s air of financial security, Daisy is now beyond his reach. With the situation between Tom and Gatsby tense, Daisy runs out of the hotel with Gatsby following her to Gatsby’ s car, where she insists on driving home as it will calm her nerves. Tom believing he has beaten Gatsby, leaves with Nick and Jordan. Gee Wilson, suspicious that his wife is having an affair argues with her. Myrtle runs outside as Gatsby’ s roadster approaches, only to be struck and killed by the car. Daisy and Gatsby speed away. Later Tom, Jordan and Nick notice a motion by Wilson’ s garage on their way to East Egg and stop. While Gee mourns, moaning over his wife’ s body, a bystander tells of having seen a yellow car strike Myrtle. As Gee takes in this information, Tom tells Gee the car wasn’ t his but Gee doesn’ t seem to listen and Tom, Jordan and Nick leave. Later that night Nick learns the truth of the accident from Gatsby — Daisy was driving when the car struck Myrtle. The next morning Nick finds Gatsby depressed, unsure whether Daisy still loves him and awaits a call from her. Seeing himself as Gatsby’ s closest friend, Nick advises Gatsby to leave for a week. “ They are a rotten crowd.” Nick says, “ you’ re worth the whole damn bunch put together.” Having tracked the owner of the roadster, Wilson appears at Gatsby’ s mansion with a gun. Wilson finds Gatsby floating in his pool and kills him before mitting suicide. Nick stages a small funeral for Gatsby, ends his relationship with Jordan, and moves back to the Midwest to escape the disgust he feels for the people surrounding Gatsby’ s life and for the emptiness and moral decay of life among the wealthy on the East Coast. Nick reflects that just as Gatsby’ s dream of Daisy was corrupted by money and dishonesty, the American dream of happiness and individualism has disintegrated into the mere pursuit of wealth. Though Gatsby’ s power to transform his dreams into reality is what makes him great, Nick reflects that the era of dreaming— both Gatsby’ s dream and the American dream— is over. II. Gatsby’ s American Dream in The Great Gatsby The American Dream is what drives the characters in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The American Dream is the firmly held belief that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their goals and bee rich and prosperous if they only work hard enough. The ideal American Dream is not so realistic. Gatsby cannot grasp the concept that The American Dream is an illusion because not everyone can get what they want if they work hard. Gatsby’ s pursuit of dream process Jay Gatsby was not born into a prominent family but he was determined to manufacture himself a rich idealistic lifestyle. After falling in love with a rich girl named Daisy, Gatsby went off to the war only to return to discover that Daisy had married another man. The reality that a rich girl could never marry a poor boy, marked the beginning of Gatsby’s purs uit of wealth. Gatsby became dishonestly wealthy through bootlegging and bought himself a lavish mansion in west egg across the bay from Daisy’s home “ It was Gatsby’s mansion” (). Gatsby was substantially wealthy with new money not of ancestral wealth. This was a major factor in the acceptance of Gatsby into the rich society of which Daisy was involved. The extravagant parties that were thrown by Gatsby every Saturday night attracting the welltodopeople were in hopes of catching the eye of Daisy. Gatsby was very wealthy with an entourage of guest attending his party’s but hardly any of them were friends only strangers taking advantage of his wealth and good nature. All though Gatsby had many parties and bought fancy cars and a huge house it was all part of an artificial lifestyle that he created. The excessive lifestyle that Gatsby had fabricated had been pieced together like a real life mosaic. He claimed to have studied at Oxford, and to have traveled all over the world none of this being true, “ This fella is a regular belasco” (pg. 47). Gatsby was phony and he couldn’t let anyone find out and ruin his chances with Daisy. He wanted people to believe that he was somebody but he over did it and people started to question his story’s. The materialistic lifestyle that Gatsby wanted was for the main purpose of making Daisy want to be with him. This did not work for Gatsby because even though he was very rich so was Daisy and she had been for her entire life. Although his bootlegging and adopted lifestyle contributed to his downfall, the main element of it was his vision of Daisy. Disillusionment of Gatsby’ s dream Gatsby’s fixation on his vision of Daisy was tremendous. It controlled what he brought and how he carried himself. Gatsby thought by being a stereotypical rich person that Daisy would be his. Gatsby’s one desire was to have Daisy and to be with her for the rest of his life. The Daisy that Gatsby had envisioned was perfect in every way, but the real Daisy seemed to be the different. Daisy toyed with Gatsby as a release from her boring life. “She vanished into her rich house, into her rich full life, leaving Gatsbynothing” (pg. 156157). This feeling that Gatsby had eventually led to his death. The consequence of the car accident that Daisy caused killing Mrytle Wilson was the murder of Gatsby. In spite of everything that Gatsby did he was unsuccessful in attaining his dream
