So the ghosts of Heathcliff and Catherine are seen walking the moors at night and even appearing within the house at Wuthering Heights. Catherine and Heathcliff’s love finally transcends the real world. The Second Generation’s Identification with NatureMen who can abnegate worldly gains are few and only visionaries like Emily Bronte can reach the ideal state. “Emily’s love, exemplified by Catherine and Heathcliff, was visionary power, the ability to transcend the material world. The loss of her vision prompted her death” (Gerin 254). That a person can only seek his love and original self in the netherworld seems too melodramatic. Return to Nature: The Way Out for CivilizationHareton and Cathy finally get married after little Linton and Heathcliff dies and Hareton regains his property. Their union is owed to the first generation’s opting to return to nature.
