some take fame as their objective。 houses were pulled down and munications had once e to a stop. It seems that the earthquake was a joke played by God on Chinese who were expecting a successful Olympic Games. However, I believe that the earthquake has brought us Chinese some positive impacts. First, it has awakened our sense of unity and brotherhood. When the disaster came, we Chinese suddenly got united like a piece of steel, each offering a hand of help to people in the disasterstricken areas. Secondly, it has shown the world our increasing national strength. Both the government and the army have demonstrated great efficiency in the battle against the disaster, which tells the world that China is on the road of rejuvenation. To sum up, the earthquake itself is a disaster, but we can gain positive things from it. Apart from what was mentioned above, to mon people, the most deeply felt thing is the value of life and love. Let’s join our hands and walk from the disaster to a bright future. 4. Entering College: Help the Needy Youngsters to Achieve Their Dreams There is no denying the fact that it has bee a hotly debated topic in China in recent years whether the needy youngsters should be helped by donators to go to college. Some hold the positive view. They say that, as the ine gap widens in China, the rich should help the poor so as to achieve harmony among the whole society. Others, however, hold the negative view. They say that no one should expect free lunch, and that the needy youngsters should turn to other ways to solve their problems. Personally, I believe that both groups have something right and that we should not go to extremes. On the one hand, rich people should be encouraged to show their love to the needy and pass on their good luck to others so as to help keep the society harmonious. On the other hand, the government should take effective measures to solve the problems, such as raising taxes on high ine and establishing special education funds to help poor students. Banks loans and parttime jobs are also good choices for needy students. To sum up, donation from society is just one of the means to help the needy youngsters to achieve their dreams. 5. On the Significance of the QingZang Railroad There is no denying the fact that the QingZang Railroad has been a focus of people’s attention ever since its opening in July 1st this year. As the first railway connecting Tibet and other parts of the country, QingZang Railroad will definitely contribute to the development of Tibetan economy and culture. First, the railway will be an engine to the development of local economy. Products from Tibet will find larger markets in other parts of China and even the world. Meanwhile, investors and investment will pour into Tibet and help local economy prosper. Secondly, with the opening of the QinghaiTibet Railway, a growing number of Chinese and foreign tourists will e to Tibet. The most important influence on the traditional Tibetan culture shall be that more people will learn and understand it and bring it forward. Actually, the most deeply felt advantage of the railway to mon people might be that the travel cost has been considerably cut down. To sum up, the opening of the QingZang Railroad is a blessing to local people and it really deserves the name “a magic road to heaven”. 6. Do We Need a Shopping Center in the Neighborhood? There is no denying the fact that it has bee a hotly debated topic in this munity in recent months whether a new shopping center should be built. To this issue residents’ attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view while others are against such a new center. Personally, I am in favor of building a new shopping center in the neighborhood. Building a shopping center where we live has a lot of potential advantages, such as the following. First, it provides more convenience and reduces time wasted in traffic. Second, it helps improve the economy of the local munity as we as that of the whole city. Just imagine, another shopping center means another petitor. If they want to survive in such a demanding market, they must provide higher quality goods and services. Last but not least, it offers job opportunities for local residents. To sum up, if it were up to me to decide whether or not to build a shopping center near my apartment, I would decide to build it. If the shopping center is successfully run, I believe the munity will benefit greatly from it. 7. College Students Should Be Permitted to Live Off Campus There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic in China in recent years whether college students should be permitted to live off campus. People’s opinions differ sharply on this issue. Many hold the negative view. Personally, I believe that college students should be allowed to live off campus. My reasons are as follow. First, most college students are adults and should have the right to choose where to live. Secondly, the living conditions on campus in many colleges are unbearable. The dormitory is usually crowded and badly equipped. Besides, the university cuts the electricity too early every night. At least dorms are not the right home for everyone. Last but not least, living off campus can help prepare students to better manage their study and life. To sum up, we should treat students as adults instead of children. Though there might be problems in allowing students to live off campus, we should not give up eating for fear of choking, as the Chinese idiom says. In today39。 on the other hand, we should take measures to solve the problems caused by pets. This can be done by banning pets from public places. In addition, large and dangerous pets should be restricted to special areas. 或 Weighing the arguments of both sides, I am inclined to agree with the latter. Anyw
