The Spanish test nearly drives me crazy. I study very hard but I still can’t manage to pass it. M: Really? I find it easy and learning Spanish is interesting. (Text 5) M: Hi, Mary. It’s Rick. W: Hi, Rick, How are you? M: Did you know it’s Sandra’s birthday on Sunday? We’re planning a surprise party for her at my house. Can you e? W: Sure, I’d love to. I love surprise parties. (Text 6) M: What are your favorite types of entertainment in your spare time? W: I love movies! I could watch a movie at home every night. I think movies tell moving stories about modern life, and you can get pletely lost in it, fetting about the stress in life and work. M: Yeah, I agree. But I prefer the plays myself. I know plays aren’t as realistic as movies. I mean, you have to imagine a lot of the setting, not like in the movies. But I like the fact that you have to use your imagination more. (Text 7) M: Hello, I’m calling to check on a bike that I ordered last week. W: Sure, could you tell me your name or order number? M: My order number is 9372928. It’s for a Ranger 5000. W: Ah, it looks like the bike was shipped yesterday and should be in tomorrow or Friday. I’ll be working for the rest of the week, so I’ll keep an eye out for it and call you when it’s in. Please give me a number where I’ll be able to reach you. (Text 8) W: Hi, Pete, have you read this article about the solar farm they’re planning to build? M: No, where’s that? In Asia? W: No, in Africa. This plant will supposedly provide up to 15% of Europe’s energy needs by 2050. People are often unhappy about the noise of wind farms, but that isn’t an issue with solar power. M: I saw a documentary at the weekend about renewable energy in Scotland. W: Really? It’s not exactly the perfect spot for a solar farm. M: No, not solar energy, but wave energy. It could provide up to ten times Scotland’s electricity usage. (Text 9) W: Can I help you? M: Yes, I’d like to borrow these five books please. Am I allowed to borrow that many at once? W: Of course. The limit is ten per day. But I’ll need to see your student ID please. M: Here you are. W: Uh oh! You can’t borrow any books. According to the puter, there was a book … It was borrowed under your name and still hasn’t been returned. That makes it three weeks overdue. M: Oh no! I lent it to a friend. She must have fotten to return it to me, and I fot all about returning it to you. W: Well, the puter will not allow me to lend you any other books until that one is returned and the fine is paid. M: What can I do now? I need these books to begin researching a paper I have to write. W: You could get a friend to borrow them for you. Or, there’s a copy machine right over there. Why not just copy the sections you need right away? M: That would cost me more than the fine. (Text 10) M: Good afternoon, I want to thank Professor Johnson for giving me the chance to talk to you today about Alaska. One of the things that concern me most is the future of the Alaska environment. About twenty years ago, before going on some wilderness research, I visited Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. It was a small city of 40,000 people surrounded by a quiet wilderness. When I made a recent trip there, I found amazing changes. Anchorage now has a hundred and eight thousand people, more than four times as many as in 1960. There’re tall buildings, shopping centers and all the crowds and traffic jams. The forests and mountains are still nearby, but they seem so small pared to the city’s great size. The discovery of oil in Alaska brought increased wealth to the state. However, there have been too many people moving to Alaska in a very short period to work on the pipeline. There is not enough housing or transportation. I think Alaska must make important decisions soon. Alaskans need to decide how to develop their natural resources and mineral wealth without destroying the wilderness and harming the wildlife. What is decided on now will affect the generations to e. For today’s lecture, I’ve brought along many of the pictures I usually show in my environmental science classes in my own university. First, I’ll show you some pictures of Alaska’s wilderness as it is today. Then I’d like to outline my specific suggestions.
