Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring。 for ornament, is in discourse。 and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of busine ss. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one。 but the general counsels, and the plots, and marshalling of affairs, e best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies, is sloth。 to use them too much for ornament, is affectation。 to make judgement wholly by their rules is the humour of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning by study: and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men condemn studies。 simple men admire them。 and wise men use them: for they teach not their own use。 but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict, and confute。 nor to believe and ta ke for granted。 nor to find talk and discourse。 but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts。 others to be read but not curiously。 and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others: but that would be, only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of book: else distilled books are like mon distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man。 conference a ready man。 and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory。 if he confer lime, he had need have a present wit。 and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise。 poets witty。 the mathematics subtle。 natural philosophy deep。 moral grave。 logic and rhetoric able to contend. AbeuntstucSa in mores. Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit, but may be wrought out by fit studies: like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone and reins。 shooting for the lungs and breast。 gentle walking for the stomach。 riding for the head。 and the like. So if a man\39。s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics。 for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again: if his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the schoolmen。 for they are cymnisectores. If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing, to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers\39。 cases: so every defect of the mind may have a special receipt. Of Riches I cannot call riches better than the baggage of virtue. The Roman word is better, impedimenta. For as the baggage is to an army, so is riches to virtue. It cannot be spared, nor left behind, but it hindreth the march。 yea, and the care of it, sometimes, loseth or disturbed! the victory: of great riches, there is no real use, except it be in the distribution。 the rest is but conceit So saith Solomon。 Where much is, there are many to consume it。 and what hath the owner, but the sight of it with his eyes? The personal fruition in any man, cannot reach to feel great riches: there is a custody of them。 or a power of dole and donative of them。 or a fame of them。 but no solid use to the ow ner. Do you not see, what feigned prices are set upon little stones, and rarities? And w hat wor ks of ostentat ion are undertaken, because there might seem to be some use of great riches? But then you will say, they may be of use, to buy men out of dangers or troubles. As Solomon saith。 Riches are as a strong hold, in the imagination of the r ich man. But BU S is excellently expressed, that it is in imagination, and not always in fact For certainly great riches have sold more men, than they have bought out. Seek not proud riches, but such as thou mayest get justly, use soberly, distribute cheerfully, and leave contentedly. Yet have no abstract nor friarly contempt of them. But distinguish, as Cicero saith well of Rabirius Postumus。 in studio rei amplificandae apparebat non avaritiae praedam, sed instumenturn bonitati, quaeri. Hearken also to Solomon, and beware of hasty gathering of riches: qidfestinat ad divitias, non erit insons. The poets feign that when Plutus (which is riches) is sent from Jupiter, he limps, and goes slowly。 but w hen he is sent from Pluto, he runs, and is swift of foot. Meaning, that r iches gotten by good means, and just labour, pace slowly。 but when they e by the death of others (as by the course of inheritance, testaments, and the like), they e tumbling upon a man. But it mought be applied likewise to Pluto, ta king him for the devil. For when riches e from the devil (as by fraud, and oppression, and unjust means), they e upon speed. The ways to enrich are m any, and most of them foul. Parsimony is one of the best, and yet is not innocent: for it withholdeth men from works of liberality, and charity. The improvement of the ground, is me most natural obtaining of riches。 for it is our great mother\39。s blessing, the earth\39。s。 but it is slow. And yet, where men of great wealth do stoop to husbandry, it muldplieth riches exceedingly. I knew a nobleman in England, that had the greatest audits of any man in my time: a great grazier, a great sheepmaster, a great timber man, a great collier, a great cornmaster, a great leadman, and so of iron, and a number of the like points of husbandry. So as the earth seemed a sea to him, in respect of the perpetual importation. It was truly
