Spark plug A spark plug is an electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of some internal bustion engines and ignites pressed airfuel mixture by means of an electric spark. Spark plugs have an insulated center electrode which is connected by a heavily insulated wire to an ignition coil on the outside. The spark plug forces electricity to arc across a gap. The electricity must be at a very high voltage in order to travel across the gap and create a good spark. Voltage at the spark plug can be anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000 volts.
