【正文】 理 ” ，增強社會的寬容度才是防范艾滋病最好的 “ 疫苗 ” AIDS ? AIDS is a disease caused by a virus called HIV (short for human immunodeficiency virus). HIV attacks the body39。s immune system. People with HIV seem to be healthy at first. When the immune system is hurt, it can no longer fight diseases the way it used to. It `s alternative names is acquired immune deficiency syndrome. ? Believed to have originated in Africa, AIDS has bee an epidemic, infecting tens of millions of people worldwide. The virus, which is transmitted from one individual to another through the exchange of body fluids (such as blood or semen), attacks white blood cells, thereby causing the body to lose its capacity to ward off infection. HIV is one of the biggest social, economic and health challenges in the world. It is a global emergency claiming over 8,000 lives every day. In fact 5 people die of AIDS every minute. If someone is HIVpositive, it means they have been infected with the virus. A person infected with HIV does not have AIDS until the virus seriously damages their immune system, making them vulnerable to a range of infections, some of which can lead to death. HIV is transmitted through body fluids in particular blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk, in fact there are only four ways you can bee HIV positive. ? As a result, many AIDS patients die of opportunistic infections that strike their debilitated bodies. AIDS first appeared in the United States in 1981, primarily among homosexuals and intravenous drug users who shared needles, but throughout the world, it is also transmitted by heterosexual contact. AIDS is the final and most serious stage of HIV disease. It is characterized by signs and symptoms of severe immune deficiency. The most mon cause of death in people with AIDS is a type of pneumonia called pneumocystis carinii pneumonia or PCP. ? There is no cure for AIDS at this time. However, treatments are available that can improve the quality of life of those suffering the infection. ?
