The two fell in love at fi rst sight and were soon married. They had a son and daught er and their happy l i fe was held up as an exampl e for hundreds of years in China. Yet in the eyes of the Jade E mperor, the Supreme Deity in Taoism, marriage between a mortal and fai ry was strictly forbi dden. He ordered t he heaven t roop t o catch Zhi nu back. Niulang grew desperate when he discovered Zhinu had been taken back to heaven. Dri ven by Niul ang39。s misery, the cow tol d him to turn its hi de i nto a pai r of shoes after it died. The magic shoes whisked Ni ulang, who carri ed his two children in baskets strung from a shoul der pol e, off on a chas e aft er t he empress. The pursuit enraged t he empress, who took her hai rpin and s lashed it across the sky creati ng the Milky Way which separated husband from wi fe. B ut all was not lost as magpi es, moved by their l ove and devot ion, form ed a bridge across the Milky Way to reunite t he fam ily. E ven the Jade Emperor was touched, and all owed Niul ang and Zhinu t o meet once a year on t he seventh night of the seventh m ont h. This is how Q ixi cam e to be. The festi val c an be traced back to t he Han Dynasty (206 BCAD 220). Traditionally, people would look up at the sky and find a bright star in the constellation Aquila as well as the star Vega, which are identified as Niulang and Zhinu. The two stars shine on opposite sides of the Milky Way. Custom s In bygone days, Qixi was not only a special day for lovers, but also for gi rls. It is also k now n as the Begging for Skills Festival or Daughters39。 Festival. In this day, girls will throw a sewing needle into a bowl ful l of wat er on t he night of Q ixi as a t est of embroi dery skills. Yet these ancient traditions and customs are slowly dying out. Many modern Chinese, particularly youngsters, seem to know more about St Valentine39。s Day on F ebruary 14, characterized by bouquets of roses, chocol ates and rom anti c candlel ight di nners, than they do about their homegrown day for lovers. Even Qixi is nowadays referred to as the Chinese Valentine39。s Day. More and more young Chinese people begin t o cel ebrat e this day in a very simil ar way as that in western countries . Fewer people than ever will gaze at the heavens on Saturday to pick out the two stars shini ng bri ght on either si de of t he Mi lky Way, that is, if people even know on which day Qixi falls. There are ready reminders dotted about, in the form of big ads say ing Sales on Chinese Valentine39。s Day! in shops, hotels and restaurants. But few young women will mark the festi val wit h thei r boy friends, or take part i n t raditi onal acti vities to pray for cleverness.
