Elementary Principles of Composition1. Choose a suitable design and hold to it.Writing, to be effective, must follow closely the thought of the writer, but not necessarily in the order of in which those thoughts occur. This calls for a scheme of procedure. In most cases the best design is no design, as with a love letter, which is simply an outpouring, or with a casual essay, which is ramble. But in most cases planning must be a deliberate prelude to writing. The first principle of position, therefore is to foresee or determine the shape of what is to e and pursue that shape. Before writing a position, it is advisable to write an outline, a process during which the writer organizes his ideas in a logical way. It is a kind of planning without which the position could just be a series of random ideas. When you write a position, first jot down ideas relevant to the topic as they e to you. If it is a subject you are not familiar with, you will have to do some research. You may add information from that research and further ideas to your list. Put down as many ideas as possible. The next step is to organize the ideas in relation to each otherto group similar ideas together, and relate one group of ideas to other groups of ideas. The final step is to delete those ideas which are irrelevant of little importance, and then reorganize your ideas into a logical orderan order which is easy for readers to follow. For example, you may organize ideas in chronological order or in order of importance. To sum up, in the opening paragraph, the main idea is introduced。 the following paragraphs serve to elaborate on it, and the concluding paragraph tries to wind up the details to restate the main idea.2. Apply perspectivesSometimes it is helpful to consider a subject in three quite different waysas static, dynamic, and relative. A static perspective would focus your attention on what a puter is. You might define it, describe its physical characteristics, analyze its parts or its main uses, or give examples of home puters. The dynamic perspective focuses on action and change. Thus you might examine the history or development of the puter, its workings or the processes involved in using it, and changes of all sorts resulting from its use. The relative perspective focuses on relationships, on systems. You might examine relationships of the puter to other things and to people. You can view the home puter as a system in itself or as a part of a larger system of information management. You can also analyze it in relation to other kinds of puters such as mainframe puters, or to the other kinds of information management tools such as library catalogs.3. Survey development strategiesThe various development strategies represent natural thinking process, and so are especially useful for generating ideas about a subject. Here are some thoughts a writer might jot down using these strategies. Narration: Tell about my first experience using a home puter. Process: How do you buy one? How does it work?Cause and Effect: why were home puters developed? What effects do they have on other things? Description: what does a home puter look like? What is a typical owner like? Definition: what is a home puter? Analysis: What are the part of the puter? What are the various tasks it can do?Classification: what kinds of people buy these puters? What types are on the market?Example: Computers save timename several waysComparison and Contrast: what similarities and differences are there between kinds of home puters? What are the differences between managing information with a puter and without? How is a puter like a library or like an office?4. Limit and focus the subjectNo matter how well you have explored your subject, almost certainly you will need to limit and focus it before you write. As you do so, keep your purpose and your audience in mind. A simple analogy helps explain why limiting and focusing are so important. When you take a picture of something you decide what it is you want to photograph, and you aim your camera in that direction. But that’s not all you do: you also look through the viewfinder to make sure the subject is correctly framed and in focus. You may decide to move in closer or eliminate distracting elements from the frame, and you may change your angle, using light and shadow to emphasize some
