Puns in the Original and the Translations By studying The Stone of the Stone, we can find that there is not an unnecessary word. Every word has its own function and value. It is one of the reasons why the work occupies a position of the most significance. The fiction was about people, so characters were the most important. John Bunyan, a great writer in the 17th century, who wrote the Pilgrim’s Progress, used symbolism to name every character in his fiction. In the Story of the Stone, the author used pun to reflect the features, appearances, and the living conditions. In this work, most names were made with pun.
