There are more and more opportunities for China to conduct extensive exchanges with the outside world, hence press conferences are held quite frequently. Premier Wen Jiabao has always had a deep interest in Chinese classical poetry which is the essence of the Chinese culture. He often quoted Chinese classical poetry in press conference to express his political views. However, interpreting Chinese classical poetry in press conference is not an easy job. This thesis tries to further analyze poetry interpreting in press conference. Purpose of the thesis In terms of Chinese classical poetry interpreting in press conference, various experts and scholars have had very profound studies from various points of views. Parts of them introduce the basic knowledge of Chinese classical poetry and some of them present to us the preparation work of interpreting Chinese classical poetry. This thesis attempts to have a profound analysis about the origin, definition and characteristics of press conference interpreting and offers some strategies to do a better job in interpreting those lines, thus making little contribution to future theoretical and practical study about Chinese classical poetry interpreting. The necessity of analyzing Chinese classical poetry interpreting is practical. A press 7 conference of high quality can covey the real information of the speaker to the listeners accurately. The speaker is often the state leader, so their speech delivered represents the fundamental interests of the Chinese people. Accurate interpreting can bring China’s real opinions to the world. Structure of the thesis This thesis prises four chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the origin, definition and characteristics of press conference interpreting. The second chapter gives a preliminary introduction to the features of the Chinese classical poetry and the reason and function of quoting the poetry. The third chapter tries to introduce the interpreting criteria and principles of Chinese classical poetry interpreting. The fourth chapter introduces the strategies utilized in interpreting Chinese classical poetry. 8 Chapter Ⅰ Interpreting in Press Conference Origin of press conference interpreting Historically, press conference interpreting served for the international conference. As the time evolves, press conference serves not only the governmental conferences, but also areas in national diplomacy, business negotiations, academic exchanges, etc. Dating back to the 20 century, professional consecutive interpreters emerged after the WWⅠ . In 1953, the founding of the International Association of Conference Interpreters（ AIIC） symbolized the beginning of press conference interpreting as a specific profession. As a special profession, interpreting has a history of 20xx years. In the west, many scholars think interpreting appears earlier than the use of words .When people began to migrate, they tried to municate with each other with different languages. At that time, some immigrants who could speak two languages acted as middlemen to help people to municate with each other. Nowadays, the interpreter serves as an important bridge between the speaker and the audience. Today, interpreting is developing with full fledge and attracting more and more attention, domestically and internationally.
