Hester and Meggie both have an introvert personality. For the sake of love and protection of the loved man, Hester keeps Dimmesdale as a secret and never divulge the secret. Meggie prefers not to tell Ralph that Danny was his son. In men’s eyes, the heroines Hester and Meggie are the women who are insulted by the public because they do not obey men’s order. On the one hand,Hester and Meggie want to live independently and even dream of having an equal right with men in future and this is just what men are afraid of in The Scarlet Letter and The Thorn Birds. On the other hand, Hester and Meggie’s virtues of being a loving mother, generosity, patience, unselfishness and conscientiousness just what men entrust to in those quantities elevate the two females in the writers and reader’s eyes and make many people believe in the existence of a strong feminist in female on Nathaniel Hawthorne and Colleen McCullough. In The Scarlet Letter, there is a very plicated human relation in society. By means of symbolism, Hawthorne describes the fate of each figure. With his deep going thought and sharp eyes, he gains an insight into the society, religion and the civilization of human beings.Hester live in an oppressive religious munity in the 17th century. Hester stands for natural human feeling, symbolizing the struggle for happiness and freedom. The persecution from the side of Puritans does not make her give up, but makes her a liberal woman, who is skillful in observing, thinking and struggling. Her charm embodies in her beauty, her loyalty to love, her courage to pursue happiness and her dignity of human personality. On the contrary, Meggie live in a liberal society of the 20th century. She is a much more individualist character pared with Hester. She got the right to love a priest. She even can ask Ralph de Bricassart to quit being a priest and marry her. Meggie faces the less plex relation in The Thorn Birds. She got her rights to make her own choice. Unfortunately, her love story is not goes like what she wants. Feminist ideas reflected in Pearl and JustineIn these two novels, Pearl and Justine, as the signs of the modern feminism reflected outthought most of the stories show us how to survived in the bad situation and develop individual personality.Pearl is one of the plexes, mysterious and interesting character in The Scarlet Letter. She seems different from Hester. One may wonder why she acts so strangely and so differently than all the other characters. She had been sent as a blessing and as retribution to remind Hester of her fall from grace and to teach her way to heaven. She always reminds her mother she was a symbol of atonement. Pearl represents a special view to research the feminist consciousness in Hester. As a daughter of Hester, Pearl is much more impetuous and wild. The austere Puritan ways punish Hester through banishment from the munity and the church, simultaneously punishing Pearl in the process. Lacking any form of maternal guidance,Pearl’s pretty much does what she pleases。s time and Meggie39。 she is the only modern feminist image in The Thorn Birds. (Jianjun Wang, 2005)4. ConclusionBy analyzing the heroines in the two novels, we learn different attitudes towards life lead to various pursuits in life。s emotions, love and marriage, the novel reveals her growth from a dependent girl to an independent woman. At the same time, Meggie’s desire and pursuit are expressed effectively, through which the feministic writing is clearly shown. The Thorn Birds also demonstrates the love, marriages and feminism consciousness. Looking through the whole passage, you can say that the author tries her best to use the beautiful words to build Meggie Cleary as a positive character and a good image in this story. Actually, she is the key character of this book and all the things happened just around her. However, those so many adjectives did no effect in covering the fact that Meggie Cleary isn’t a “simple” woman. She has an angel face and charm. She is also an unlucky girl, because all the people she loves or has loved die. For example: Frank, Paddy Cleary, Stuart Cleary, O’Neill, Dane and Father Ralph de Bricassart. On the other side, she is an ambitious woman. For achieving her aim, she tries to gain the things she wants. However, Father Ralph de Bricassart really loved Meggie. Meggie knew that Father Ralph would never leave God and Catholicism, so she has a child of Father Ralph and successfully hide the truth. She is very proud and joyful for her great “contribution” and ignores Justine O’Neill (daughter of Meggie and Luke)Unfortunately, at last, she lost the two men: Father Ralph de Bricassart and Dane O’Neill. Meggie loved Father Ralph de Bricassart very much. However, she can not stay with Ralph de Bricassart as long as she wants. In The Thorn Birds, Heroin
