“For, the tenderness of Joe was so beautifully proportioned to my need, that I was like a child in his hands? As if I were still the small helpless creature to whom he had so abundantly given of the wealth of his great nature.”11At this moment, their meetings were delighted. This made Pip understood that the bourgeois interpersonal relationship was based absolutely on money. Without money, nothing could be achieved with them, while the ordinary working people like Joe would never think in terms of money. The real virtue existed in the mon people. These people should not be looked down but should be respected. As for Pip, restoring the temporary lost virtue was the most important thing. Pip prayed for Joe sincerely, move to me nor any son.” All these presented that there was a natural tie between Magwitch and Pip.Pip’s initial thought was to escape from Magwitch as soon as possible. However, after fierce struggle in his mind, he realized that this man treated him so nice. Pip couldn’t forget Magwitch’s favor on him。“I work pretty hard for a sufficient living, and therefore—Yes, do well.”10t abandon his original kindness.C. The Mysterious BenefactorWhen Pip was 23 years of age, in a stormy and wet midnight, an old sailor went into Pip’s room. Pip was surprised that the sailor was the convict he had helped. And Pip knew the truth that his benefactor was not Miss Havisham, but the convict。But still Pip represented his kindness.“in a lowlived bad way”.1. Before Meeting Miss Havisham and EstellaIn the beginning of the novel, a lonely, nervous and scared little Pip appeared in readers’ eyes,“and that the small bundle of shivers growing afraid of it all and beginning to cry, was Pip.”1.Dickens’s father, John, was a kind and likable man, but he was inpetent with money and piled up tremendous debs throughout his life. When he was nine, his family moved to London. When he was twelve, his father was arrested and taken to debtors’ prison.Ⅱ.The Analysis of Development of Pip’s CharacterMuch critical attention has been paid to Dickens’ Great Expectations as a bildungsroman, seeing it as tracing a protagonist’s initiation into life and the changes it brings about in personality and character. In Pip we have a character who struggled with his historical and personal limitations, and it was simple enough to say that he passed through the stages of development that allowed him to bee a man, that allowed him a sense of his capacity and need for love. The novel does, of course, concern a natural longing for love and social integration, and the means by which these cannot be gained.“a Constable in the kitchen, waiting to take me up.”“Morning made a considerable difference in my general prospect of Life, and brightened it so much that it scarcely seemed the same.”4“all around for a suitable spot on which to deposit his hat.” At first, he put his hat on the floor. But he felt it was out of place. So he put it on the fireplace carefully again, but it slipped time and time again, which made Pip angry, and Joe embarrassed. The hat was the symbol of gap between Pip and Joe, and it represented Joe’s faith and Pip’s treachery. When Pip was in a high position, there was no bridge for them to municate. Joe even called Pip“great expectations”, he gained something more valuable——the revival of moral.“great expectations” unexpectedly came from such a man, who made him feel like standing upon edge of cliff. He said:“great expectations” and lost it, but he found his lost essentiality.B. The Influence from JoePip treated Magwitch heart and soul, which cleared the path for his return to Joe and being friends with Joe. After Magwitch’s death, Pip lost his property and was in deep debts. Meanwhile, he was very sick. Experienced the storms and troubles of life, his spirit broke down. No one but the kind Joe came to Pip’s rescue, even though Joe had been long time shunned by Pip. Joe not only paid off Pip’s debts with his hardearned money, but also took care of Pip when Pip was in illness. Joe never abandoned Pip, especially when Pip needed him. All kinds of feeling welled up in his heart.Ⅳ.ConclusionGreat Expectations explores the changes and development of the human nature. Guilt and desire, money and the nature of capitalism are pervasive themes in it. Due to the corrupting of cash, Pip, a plain and kind young man, turned into a snobbish and hypocrite man. Later, the hardship and sharp reality resumed his pure nature. The novel’s appeal lies in its penetrating depictions of character, rich description of social environment, and alludes to the social evils. When Great Expectations narrates Pip’s ungratefulness, it is always on the basis of his nature of simplicity and kindness, which makes us can feel his simplehearted childishness all the time through his narration. Pip straightly told readers the frustration in his life and his intrapersonal contradiction. Meanwhile, The honesty was the vivid representation of his humanness and morality. The story about Pip indicates that human won’t be defeated by money under any conditions, and human’s own value of themselves is very important. If someone loves others, he will receive the same or more repayment. For Dickens, pure love is the method of expiation for faulted, timid and guilty person.“great expectations”. Hence, there was no indebted color on it. He broke f
