【正文】 望指出這里競爭激烈要想成功銷售出去你方報價須具有吸引力否則將有困難 We would like to point out that because of the harsh petition in our market your quotation must be attractive to the buyers at our end before we could sell successfully your products here In Chinese sentence there are five parts pointing out five meanings but there are no conjunctions A ma can used to link these clauses in the Chinese sentence however English sentence must use conjunctions to show the logical relations Therefore in the above translation conjunction because of and before are used to indicate the inner relations There is a special conjunction which ought to be noticed when The conjunction when in English covers more than one semantic relation In dealing with such particular conjunction changing its logical relation according to logical judgments or the situation of context is a proper strategy For example He gave up placing an order when he liked the product very much because he was out of money 雖然他很喜歡這個產(chǎn)品可還是沒有下訂單因為他沒有資金了 According to logical judgment temporal conjunction when can be changed into implicit concessive meaning So this sentence can be translated like that 5 Conclusion On the basis of the above discussion we may e to the conclusion Conjunction plays an important role in the business letter writing So much attention should be paid on them when translating Therefore when we translate business letters we should take the functional aspect into consideration The contrast of hypotaxis and parataxis is the most distinct difference between English and Chinese When tackling business letter translation no matter in EC translation or CE translation we can mainly adopt two translation strategies 1 omit the conjunction 2 add the conjunction Adding conjunctions is one of the translating techniques that are monly used in translation practice Sometimes conjunctions are added in order to get a clear and full reproduction of the source message or original thought Omitting conjunctions from the original sentence can avoid redundancy and reception without affecting the source message thus making translation more idiomatic As noted above there are more diversities than similarities between English and Chinese in expression of ideas It is necessary that we should either add or omit some conjunctions for the purpose of clarity and brevity in translation The aim of omission is the same as that of amplification that is to achieve a functionally satisfactory correspondence between the source and target texts What is to be omitted largely depends on the relevant wording of you reproduction Omission doesnt mean we can leave out the original thought at will or those words essential for the clear and full reproduction of the original meaning otherwise our reproduction would be inplete or even erroneous The differences of conjunctions between Chinese and English create much trouble for language users especially the translator Underuse or misuse of conjunctions is likely to make the text less prehensible An appropriate method of treating conjunctions in different styles is needed Consequently this paper has talked about the conjunctions in business letters It is suggested that translator should pay great attention to the expectation of the reader the intentionality of the source text and overall effect of the text Functional equivalence theory emphasizes that translation is a kind of culture transfer a municative interaction a cross culture event Therefore translation of conjunctions in business letters requires the translator bine the municative function of the text with the response of the target text readers to determine the translation strategies Bibliography [1] Dijk Van Handbook of Discourse Analysis [M] New York Academic
