【正文】 the primary message that the writer intends to convey. This step would do much help to the following translation. the translation in conformity with Chinese syntaxThe translation in loose and incoherent Chinese sentence requires to be rearranged into coherent Chinese sentences,in other word,it is necessary to arrange the translation in conformity with Chinese syntax. No matter how difficult the original is,the translator must first have a thorough prehension of the content and spirit of the whole text and then translate it as it is. And at the same time he must always pay enough attention to the coherence of the text, namely, the coherence between sentences and paragraphs so that the translation may read as an integral whole. If a translator does not take this step into consideration, and begins his translation word for word as soon as he es across a long sentence or a piece of context,he can hardly succeed for he goes against the principles of translation. Just as Chernyshevsky(18281889)says definitely that the wordforword translation couldn’t get close to the original, but on the contrary would make it more difficult to understand.(Sun Miqing 1989:276) Only when translators arrange the translation in conformity with Chinese syntax, can they achieve a satisfying answer. the translation according to the style of the original The last process of translating English long sentence is to do the revision, especially revising the translation according to the style of the original. The translator must understand the content and style of the original thoroughly and profoundly, and then creatively and accurately reproduces it with the help of his outstanding art of translation. Lu Xun maintains that translation must not only transmit the thoughts and feelings of the author but also contribute to the development of the reader’s intelligence.” He adds “A translator must strive,on the one hand,to make his translation easy for the readers to understand, and on the other,to keep the charm and style of the author.”(Zhang Jin 1987:324)If one wants to revise his translation and reproduce the original style satisfactorily, one must have two points of view before he sets about his translation. First of all, he must have the literary point of view. The translator should always remember what he is working at is the long and plex sentences or text written by somebody else and try his utmost to turn his translation into a work of art which is in conformity with the thought, feeling and style of the original. Thus, the translation will be as moving and vivid as the original work and the reader may be esthetically entertained as well. Secondly, he must as well have a linguistic point of view. In the process of translating, all the phrases and words should be attentively studied so that the best expressions may be chosen to satisfy the needs of reproducing the thought, feeling and style of the original. If translators have done this, even if some individual word or phrase were not satisfactorily rendered, they would not affect the style of the work as a whole. So long as the general tone or spirit of the original is conveyed, it can be said that the original style is basically reproduced. The abovementioned four steps are generally interwoven throughout the process of English long sentence translation which should be followed by translators. A conscientious and responsible translator must get fully prepared for translation through these steps before he sets his pen to paper. On the other hand, the layout of a good piece of translation, to a great extent, es from the creative work of the translator, whose flexibility and adaptability are tested whenever long and plex sentences occur. In this sense, there is no reason for translators to stick to the above sequence mechanically. Commonlyused techniques to translate English long sentences into ChineseEnglish Long sentences translation serves as an important part between English—Chinese translation. Proper English long sentences translation may lay a good foundation for the translation of a text and is the essential qualification of a translator. But how to give a plete transcript of the ideas of the original English long sentence, and convey the author’s ideas faithfully and exactly? Some good skills can help translators do that. Talking of the various concrete methods of English long sentence translation, there are too many to enumerate and exhaust, thus, only several monlyused ones will be discussed here. Rearrangement of the word order Sometimes,it is necessary for translators to rearrange the word order when translating English long sentences into Chinese. It is because the two languages have each their own characteristics. For instance, attributive phrases and clauses usually follow the words they modify in English whereas they usually precede the modified words in Chinese. Englishmen and Americans prefer to put the adverbials of time and of place at the end of a sentence while Chinese people often have them at the beginning. If these two kinds of adverbials coexist in a single sentence, the adverbial of time usually follows that of place in English, but they are exactly in the reverse order in Chinese. Some examples will show that.Original: It would have been difficult to find a happier child than I was as I lay in my crib at the close of that eventful day and lived over the joys it had brought me. (Sun Yingchun 2001:167)Original Version:再也找不到比我更幸福的孩子了,在這個意義重大的日子即將結(jié)束的時候,我躺在小床上回顧一天的歡樂。我們根本無話可說?!癲ownfall” “abolition” “exploitation” “l(fā)iberation” in all nouns, but they are turned into verbs in the Chinese version. All these words in the original are nouns, yet they share the function of verbs, which are called “verbal nouns”.There are some other examples:Example 2 They argue that regimes e and go,that political issues are always transient, that the Olympic spirit is transcendent. (Luo Xinzhang 1995: 206)他們說,政府無非是走馬燈,政治問題總是朝生夕逝的,只有奧林匹克精神才是永世
