In fact, Port Royal is not the only town to have been destroyed by a natural disaster. One of the earliest disasters was the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy in79A D. The two ancient Roman cities were engulfed and buried in volcanic mud. Pompeii was rediscovered in 1748 and Herculaneum in 1709.
