The fi rst deer cam e back to Chi na to the N anhai zi Mi lu Park 20 kil om eters south of Bei ji ng and the centre i n Dafeng, Ji ngsu Provi nce. The deer centai nly seem happy to be back i n Chi na because thei r num bers have grown rapi dl y. There are now so many of them that a new park has been opened for them i n H ebei Provi nce. At the m om ent the Mil u der li ve i n centres where they are bei ng wel l protected and care for . It i s hoped that one day there wil be enough anim al s to l et them li ve i n the wi ld agai n. Uni t 5 The band that wasn’t H ave you ever wanted to be part of a band as a fam ous si nger or m usi ci ans? H ave you ever dream ed of pl aying in front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at whi ch everyone i s cl appi ng and apreciati ng your m usi c? Do you si ng Karaoke and pretend you are a fam ous si nger li ke Song Zuyi ng or Li u H uan? To be honest, a l ot of peopl e atach great im portance to be ing rich and fam ous. But just now do peopl e form a band? Many musi cians m et and form a band because they li ke to write and pl ay thei r own m usic. They may start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practi si ng thei r m usi c i n som eone’s house i s the first step to fam e. Som etim es they m ay pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn som e extra m oney for them selves or to pay for thei r i nstruments. Later they m ay gi ve performances i n pubs or cl ubs, for whi ch they are paid i n cash. Of course they hope to m ake records i n a studio and sel mi li ons of copi es to be e mil li onai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di fferent way. It was cal ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usi ci ans were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel as pl ay music, m ost of whi ch was based l osel y on the Beatles. The TV ani zer had planned to fi nd four m usi ci ans who could act as wel as si ng. They put an advertisem ent in a newspaper l ooking for rock m usicians, but they could only find one who was god enough. They had to use actors for the other thre members of theband. As som e of these actors could not si ng wel enough, they had to rel y on other musi ci ans to hel p them. So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow their perform ances were humorous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that their fans form ed cl ubs in order to get m ore famil iar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would play and si ng songs written by other m usi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so in whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about their work, the Monkees started to play and si ng thei r own songs li ke a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touring and pl ayi ng thei r own m usic. In the USA they became even m ore popular than the Beatl es and sol d even more records. The band broke up about 1970, but happil y they reunited in the mid1980s. They produced a new record in 1996, with which they cel ebrated their former tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) Not long after Freddy and the band becam e fam ous, they vi si ted Britai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by wai ti ng for hours to get tickets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now qui te confi dent when he went i nto a concert hal. He enjoyed si ngi ng and al l the congratul ati ons afterwards! H is most exciting invitati on was to perform on a TV programme cal ed “ Top of pops “. He had to go to London, wear an expensi ve sui t and give a performance to a TV cam era. It fel t very strange. But as son as the programm e was over, the tel ephones which were i n the sam e rom started ri nging. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d see Freddy and hi s band agai n. They were trul y stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and his band coul d not go out anywhere without bei ng fol owed. Even when they wore sunglasses or beards peopl e recogni zed them. Fans found them even when they went i nto toil et. They tried to hi de in the reading rom s of li brari es, but i t was usel es. Someone was al ways there! Thei r personal li fe was regul arly discused by peopl e who di d not know them but tal ked as if they cl ose fri ends. At l ast feel ing very upset and sensi ti ve, Freddy and his band real i zed that they must leave the country before i t becam e too painful for them. For the Japanese festi val O bon, people shoul d go to clean graves and li ght i ncense in m emory of thei r ancestors. They also li ght l am ps and pl ay m usic because they thi nk that thi s wi l l ead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexi co, peopl e celebrate the Day of the Dead i n earl y Novemver.
