u are a fam ous singer l ike Song Zuying or Li u H uan? To be honest, a lot of peopl e attach great im portance to bei ng ri ch and famous. But just now do people form a band? Many m usici ans m eet and form a band because they l ike to wri te and pl ay their own m usi c. They may start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practising thei r m usic i n someone’s house i s the fi rst step to fam e. Som etimes they may play to passersby i n the stret or subway so that they can earn some extra money for them sel ves or to pay for thei r instrum ents. Later they m ay gi ve perform ances i n pubs or cl ubs, for which they are pai d i n cash. O f course they hope to make records in a studi o and sel l mi li ons of copi es to be e m il li onai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di fferent way. It was cal ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usicians were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel l as play m usi c, most of which was based loosely on the Beatl es. The TV ani zer had pl anned to find four musi cians who coul d act as wel l as sing. They put an adverti sement i n a newspaper looki ng for rock musi ci ans, but they coul d onl y fi nd one who was god enough. They had to use actors for the other thre members of theband. As some of these actors coul d not si ng wel enough, they had to rely on other m usi ci ans to hel p them. So during the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow their perform ances were humorous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that their fans form ed cl ubs in order to get m ore famil i ar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would pl ay and si ng songs written by other musi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng thei r own songs l ike a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touri ng and pl ayi ng thei r own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even more popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even m ore records. The band broke up about 1970, but happi ly they reuni ted i n the mi d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated their former tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) Not long after Freddy and the band became fam ous, they vi si ted Britai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed their devotion by wai ti ng for hours to get ti ckets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now qui te confi dent when he went i nto a concert hal . H e enjoyed si ngi ng and al l the congratul ati ons afterwards! H is most exciting i nvitati on was to perform on a TV programme cal led “ Top of pops “. H e had to go to London, wear an expensi ve suit and gi ve a perform ance to a TV camera. It felt very strange. But as soon as the programm e was over, the tel ephones which were i n the sam e rom started ri nging. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d se Fredy and hi s band agai n. They were truly stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and his band could not go out anywhere wi thout being fol lowed. Even when they wore sungl asses or beards peopl e recogni zed them. Fans found them even when they went i nto toil et. They tried to hi de in the readi ng rom s of li brari es, but i t was usel es. Someone was always there! Their personal li fe was regularl y discussed by peopl e who di d not know them but tal ked as if they cl ose fri ends. At l ast feeli ng very upset and sensitive, Freddy and hi s band reali zed that they m ust l eave the country before i t became too pai nful for them. On thi s important feast day, people eat food i n the shape of skul s and cakes wi th “bones” on them. They offer food, fl owers and gi fts to the dead. The Western holi day Hal owen al so had i ts origin i n ol d bel iefs about the return of the spi ri ts of dead peopl e. It is now a chi ldren’s festival, when they can dress up an go to thei r neighbours’ hom es to ask for sweets. If the nei ghbours do not gi ve any swers, the chil dren m ight pl ay a tri ck on them. In the USA, Col umbus Day i s in m emory of the arival of Chri stopher Col um bus i n the N ew World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi , the l eader who helped gai n India’s i ndependece from Bri tain.
