【正文】 ng methodology. At present, the most frequently used method remains traditional method though some teachers have tried to adopt the relatively new municative approaches. However, the problem is that some teachers do not have clear ideas about the new approaches while others either find them not suitable or are not able to implement the approaches properly. Though people’s focus of language study has shifted from language knowledge to language petence, high school students still study very hard for the college entrance exam. They pay great attention to the textbooks and the exercises which are related to exams while neglecting doing different kinds of extracurriculum reading. Possibility and necessity of adopting English newspapers in China’s high school English teachingThe New Curriculum Standard of English has made a clear requirement that students in high school should have the ability to read and understand the English newspapers and magazines while the teachers should make good use of other curriculum resources such as TV, radio program recordings, images, realia, multimedia disk resources, various kinds of Internet resources, newspapers, journals and so on besides dealing with the textbooks properly. (My own translation) In parison, newspapers are the optimal supplementary teaching resources for they are easy to obtain with low cost and a high level of practicality to be dealt with. It is also clearly indicated in the New Curriculum that during high school, students should reach level seven (altogether nine levels). In the description of level seven general objectives, it is included that students can read the simplified edition of original English works and English periodical publications, which are especially provided for high school students. Students’ amount of extracurriculum reading should e to 230 thousand words. Students should learn to use about 2200 words and 300 to 400 expressions or phrases. Besides, much more is required to improve students’ cultural awareness. (My own translation) It is believed that students are likely to fail to reach the standards if they do not use English periodicals as extra materials for English study. Thus, it is of great importance and necessity to develop students’ language petence, especially the reading ability. In order to get students to read extensively, newspapers can play a very helpful role since newspaper reading accords to the requirement of the New Curriculum Standard. Secondly, newspaper reading is on the same direction with the college entrance exam reform and newspapers pensate some defects of the outdated textbooks. Thirdly, the various novel content which is informative for both the teachers and students satisfies the different needs and students of heterogeneous language petence. The extraordinary newspapers, which are especially designed for the teens, can no doubt spark the interests of the high school students. Newspapers play the role as a municative bridge, which links what they know about the outside world and what they have learned in class. Thus, when they have prehensive input, they can yield output sooner or later. Fourthly, adopting newspapers as supplementary materials in English teaching is necessary and definitely a challenge for the teachers since they are the ones to provide the resources and design the class activities. This means that teachers also need to read more. The application of newspapers in English teaching benefits teachers and students alike. Finally, China now has many kinds of English newspapers, which are very easy to get as teaching resources, especially, 21st Century, with affordable prices for the majority. Meanwhile, newspaper reading is so practical that it is useful for the whole lifetime. So far, nationally, there are more than 120 experimental schools which are attempting newspaper reading in English class. It has been proved that it is possible and practical to use newspapers in China’s high school English teaching. Part The definition of languageThere are many definitions of “l(fā)anguage” found in dictionaries and linguistics books. Different views on language generate different teaching methodologies. The understanding of the nature of language may provide the basis for a particular teaching method. (Richards and Rodgers, 1986) Language is a system of munication consisting of a set of small parts and a set of rules which decide the ways in which these parts can be bined to produce messages that have meaning. (Cambridge International Dictionary of English 1995:795) It indicates that language is used to municate and the municative language petence is important and should be highlighted. Principles of municative approachesThough there is no fixed definition for municative language teaching, it has generally been accepted in the field of second language teaching.
