【正文】 an appointment of’. Syntactic Features of Business English. Sentence Length Generally, long and plicated sentences are more difficult for the reader to understand than shorter, simple ones. Long sentences can make business letters clumsy and difficult to read and thus hinder clear munication. While short ones are easy to organize and are paratively casual and colloquial. Short sentences are often used in daily and unofficial business correspondence. For example,1)Ordinary version: Because of both parties’ good cooperation, the above parties are very satisfied. We wele your requirement to continue the cooperation.Professional version: Owing to the fact that through our close cooperation, the abovementioned contract has been executed smoothly to the satisfaction of both parties, we wele your offer to continue the cooperation. The context and munication function of business English pel people to use programmed sentence structure, which differs greatly from the Chinese logic and the mon way in daily English translation. Thus the ordinary translation logic can not meet the needs of professional business English translation in this aspect.. Use of Strong Opening Sentences In many business letters, we can see the sentences are always written strongly, going straight to the point and expressing the subject of the letter, instead of making some longwinded references to the correspondence received. Let’s pare the following examples.1) Version 1: Long and WeakTo give you a general idea of our products, we enclose a plete set of leaflets showing various products being handled by this corporation with detailed specifications and means of packing. Version 2: Concise and StrongWe enclose a plete set of leaflets for you to have a general idea of our products. From the above examples, we may notice that strong opening sentences are more straightforward and concise. Americans business people maintain that the spoken style used in business letters produces a friendlier atmosphere. Just like examples of version 2, the strong opening sentence bears colloquial characteristics, which are direct, short, and clear. This kind of opening sentences enables the readers to grasp the main purport of a letter within a short time.. Wording Features of Business English. Use of the Present Tense Business English often uses the present tense to emphasize an actual, principled and effective mode. Other tenses are used as necessary plementarities. For example,1)貴方要求我方報出實盤:500打各種尺碼,各種顏色的天壇牌絲綢男寸衫,9月裝船,歐登賽交貨。 2) They missed the last bus, and had to fool it. 他們未趕上最后一班公共汽車,不得不走著去了。(omit “a and the”). Omission of Cumbersome WordsAs what I’ve pointed out that one standard of business English translation is conciseness. So, when we translate business English into Chinese, we can omit some cumbersome words. For example,1) If translating “speak to the consumer” literary into “向消費者說” doesn’t suit the Chinese expression. While translating it into “表達情感” will be much more suitable. The amount of the antidumping duty to be close to, but not exceed, the dumping margin.Translation: 反傾銷稅的稅額可接近于傾銷幅度,但不得超過傾銷幅度. From the translation, we discover that an adjective, “close”, in the legal document of international business English may be expressed in Chinese with a verb “接近”.. Translation of Abbreviations In business English, a lot of abbreviations often are used. The translators must have a good knowledge of them and translate them exactly. For example,OPEC 歐佩克 EEC 歐共體 APEC 亞太經(jīng)合組織 CCPIT 中國國際貿(mào)易促進委員會. Translation of Courteous Tone As mentioned above, the courteous tone in business English is important in business activities. The most monly used word in Chinese to show courtesy is one character “請”, while in English, we need to employ the expression like “we would appreciate…”, “we would be glad to” and modal verbs “would”, “could”.1) And in a bestselling book, Lester Thurow told us that America would soon be going head to head with a German led Europe in the struggle for world markets.萊斯特?瑟羅在他的一本暢銷書中斷言,美國不久將要與德國領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的歐洲勢均力敵地爭奪國際市場. Here, the noun “struggle” is translated into verb “爭奪”. It’s more direct and conciseness.. Translating Adjectives into Adverbs Sometimes we may translate adjective in English into adverbs in Chinese when the situation needs. For example, 1)Here, we omit “and mercials”.. Adding Necessary Words Generally speaking, translators can’t add or omit the meaning of the original expression. But it doesn’t mean that translators can’t change any word in the original text. As English and Chinese are two different kinds of languages. They have their own features. So, translators sometimes can add some words if necessary. But it should loyal to the original meaning. For example,1) It’s a pleasure for us to offer you the goods as follows.非常榮幸向貴方報盤如下(omit “for us”)2)它是亞洲新出現(xiàn)的最出色的經(jīng)濟發(fā)展國。 on the other hand, by means of some modern media, such as emerce and internet, used in international business relation, translators are requested to provide quickly and correctly with mercial messages of high quality, much less time to make a serious consideration of wording. Under such a condition, translators are required to improve their speed and quality of translation through conversance with mercial knowledge and proficient skills in business translation.. Standards for Business English Translation AS to the criteria of translation, what we should first mention is Yan Fu’s threecharacter standard, namely, faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, which has exercised great flounce on our translation work since it was founded 100 years ago. To some extent, Yan Fu’s standard can be neither wholly applied to business translation. As we all know, in some aspects, business translation is much more difficult than literary translation. Because, besides li
