The TV ani zer had pl anned to find four m usi cians who coul d act as wel l as sing. They put an adverti sem ent i n a newspaper l oki ng for rock m usi ci ans, but they coul d onl y fi nd one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not si ng wel l enough, they had to rel y on other m usi ci ans to hel p them . So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow thei r perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that their fans formed cl ubs i n order to get more fami li ar wi th them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other m usi ci ans. However, after a year or so i n whi ch they became m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to play and si ng their own songs like a real band.
