It is a highly symbolic meditation on the disintegration of the American dream in an era of unprecedented prosperity and material excess. On the one hand, Fitzgerald shows a running theme of how the American Dream affects all of the characters in The Great Gatsby, especially the major male characters, Gatsby, Nick and Tom. He also uses the distinctive writing style to introduce the three major male characters. On the other hand, according to Fitzgerald?s personality and experience, the three male characters are generally considered being written autobiographically reflecting the different sides of the author?s characters, which attracts readers to some extent. Key words: American Dream, Daisy Buchanan, Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby 摘 要 《了不起的蓋茨比》是美國(guó)現(xiàn)代文學(xué)史上最優(yōu)秀的作品之一。它反思了一個(gè)空前繁榮、物質(zhì)過(guò)剩時(shí)代的美國(guó)夢(mèng)的破滅，展現(xiàn)了美國(guó)夢(mèng)對(duì)人們?nèi)粘Ｉ畹南麡O影響，尤其是對(duì)男性人物（蓋茨比、尼克、湯姆）的影響上。盡管他們對(duì)自己的生活都充滿(mǎn)了雄偉的抱負(fù)，但變質(zhì)了的美國(guó)夢(mèng)卻粉碎了他們的夢(mèng)想。此外，菲茨杰拉德還運(yùn)用獨(dú)特的手法描述了這三個(gè)特殊的男性人物；通過(guò)對(duì)這三個(gè)人物與菲茨杰拉德的對(duì)照可以看出：作者從某種程度上說(shuō)是在講述自己的經(jīng)歷，蓋茨比、尼克、湯姆實(shí)際上是作家個(gè)性特點(diǎn)三個(gè)不同側(cè)面的反映，這也是小說(shuō)之所以成功的魅力所在。 4 關(guān)鍵詞 : 美國(guó)夢(mèng)；黛西布坎南；菲茨杰拉德；《了不起的蓋茨比》 ON THE MALE CHARACTERS IN THE GREAT GATSBY 1. Introduction Reading Fitzgerald?s works, we can remind of many literary values from them. People usually show more interests on Fitzgerald?s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. Some articles about The Great Gatsby have been published, such as American Dream and Character Symbolization in the Novel The Great Gatsby1,On Nick Carraway’s Dual Roles in The Great Gatsby2,Gatsby: Another Fitzgerald3,etc. These arguements are both odds and ends, not integrated. So, the aim of this article is to perfectly introduce the three male characters (Gatsby, Nick and Tom). And as we have known, only having enough understanding of the author and his personal life, the article can be drawed clearly. Although at that time, Mark Twain and William Dean Howells thought that America would bee the hope of the whole world, F. Scott Fitzgerald gradually found that that socalled new world was totally a disaster. F.
