(The Little Match Girl)In the winter of 1845, a poor little girl tried to sell matches in the streets for her family. It was a cold, cold evening. It was snowing and people in horse carriages and in the streets did not notice the little girl... Not until the next morning, when she was lying quiet in the snow...1845年的冬天(注:《賣火柴的小女孩》寫于1845年),一個(gè)可憐的小女孩在大街上賣火柴,以此維持家里的生活。 直到第二天早晨,她靜靜地躺在雪中……Once upon a time a little girl tried to make a living by selling matches in the street. The snowclad streets were deserted. From brightly lit windows came the tinkle of laughter and the sound of singing. But the poor little match seller sat sadly beside the fountain. Her ragged dress and worn shawl did not keep out the cold. She hadn39。t sold one box of matches all day and she was frightened to go home, for her father would certainly be angry. The little girl39。s fingers were stiff with cold. If only she could light a match! But what would her father say at such a waste! Falteringly she took out a match and lit it. What a nice warm flame! The little match seller cupped her hand over it, and as she did so, she magically saw in its light a big brightly burning stove. She held out her hands to the heat, but just then the match went out and the vision faded. The night seemed darker than before and it was getting colder. After hesitating for a long time, she struck another match on the wall, and this time the glimmer turned the wall into a great sheet of crystal. Beyond that stood a fine table laden with food and lit by a candlestick. Holding out her arms towards the plates, the little match seller seemed to pass through the glass, but then the match went out and the magic faded. She lit the third match and an even more wonderful thing happened. There stood a Christmas tree hung with hundreds of candles, glittering with tinsel and colored balls. Oh, how lovely! exclaimed the little match seller, holding up the match. Then, the match burned her finger and flickered out. Scarcely aware of what she was doing, the little match seller lit another match. This time, she saw her grandmother. Granny, stay with me! she pleaded, as she lit one match after the other, so that her grandmother would not disappear like all the other visions. However, Granny did not vanish, but gazed smilingly at her. Then she opened her arms and the little girl hugged her crying: Granny, take me away with you! A cold day dawned and a pale sun shone on the fountain and the icy road. Close by lay the lifeless body of a little girl surrounded by spent matches. Poor little thing! exclaimed the passersby. She was trying to keep warm! But by that time, the little match seller was far away, where there is neither cold, nor hunger, nor pain. (We39。ll See)Once upon a time, there was a farmer in the central region of China. He didn39。t have a lot of money and, instead of a tractor, he used an old horse to plow his field. One afternoon, while working in the field, the horse dropped dead. Everyone in the village said, Oh, what a horrible thing to happen. The farmer said simply, We39。ll see. He was so at peace and so calm, that everyone in the village got together and, admiring his attitude, gave him a new horse as a gift. Everyone39。s reaction now was, What a lucky man. And the farmer said, We39。ll see. A couple days later, the new horse jumped a fence and ran away. Everyone in the village shook their heads and said, What a poor fellow! The farmer smiled and said, We39。ll see. Eventually, the horse found his way home, and everyone again said, What a fortunate man. The farmer said, We39。ll see. Later in the year, the farmer39。s young boy went out riding on the horse and fell and broke his leg. Everyone in the village said, What a shame for the poor boy. The farmer said, We39。ll see. Two days later, the army came into the village to draft new recruits. When they saw that the farmer39。s son had a broken leg, they decided not to recruit him. Everyone said, What a fortunate young man. The farmer smiled again and said, We39。ll see. Moral of the story: There39。s no use in overreacting to the events and circumstances of our everyday lives. Many times what looks like a setback, may actually be a gift in disguise. And when our hearts are in the right place, all events and circumstances are gifts that we can learn valuable lessons from. (The Most Beautiful Heart)One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large crowd gathered, and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a flaw in it. Suddenly, an old man appeared and said, Why, your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine. 突然,一位老人出現(xiàn)在人群中,說(shuō):“你的心不如我的美麗?!?The crowd and the young man looked at the old man39。s heart. It was full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn39。t fit quite right, and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing. 圍觀者和年輕人都朝老人的心看去:它布滿了傷疤,有的地方被挖去又重新填補(bǔ)上,但修補(bǔ)得不甚完整,留下一些參差不齊的疤痕。實(shí)際上,有的地方缺失了整塊,甚至露出很深的豁口。 The young man laughed. Comparing your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars. 年輕人笑了起來(lái):“我們兩人的心相比,我的是那么完美,而你的卻是一堆傷疤?!?Yes, said the old man, Yours looks perfect but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love. I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart that fits into the empty place in my heart. But because the pieces aren39。t exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared. “是的,”老人說(shuō),“你的心從表面來(lái)看很完美,但我絕不會(huì)跟你交換。你看,每個(gè)傷疤都代表我為別人獻(xiàn)出的一份愛(ài)——我掏出
