Definition from Wikipedia An operating system (OS) is an interface between hardware and applications。 it is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing of the limited resources of the puter. Computer System Components 1. Hardware – provides basic puting resources (CPU, memory, I/O devices). 2. Operating system – controls and coordinates the use of the hardware among the various application programs for the various users. 3. Application programs– define the ways in which the system resources are used to solve the puting problems of the users (pilers, database systems, video games, business programs). 4.
