A young man and a young woman wer e si t ing behind m e. They were talki ng loudly. I got very angr y. I could not hear t he act or s . I t urned r ound. I looked at he man and the wom an angr il y. They did not pay any at ent ion. In t he end, I coul d not bear it . Pinhur st is only f ive m il es f r om Si lbury, but Mr Scot t cannot get a t el ephone f or hi s new garage, so he has just bought twel ve pi geons. Yest er day, a pi geon car ied t he fi rst message fr om Pi nhur st to Si lbury. The bir d cover ed the di st ance i n thr e minutes. Up t o now, Mr Scot t has sent a great many requests f or spar e par ts and ot her urgent mesages f r om one gar age to t he other. I n thi s way, he has begun hi s own pr ivate t el ephone 6 Percy But tons 珀西巴頓斯 I have just moved t o a house in Br idge St reet. Yesterday a beggar knocked at my door . He asked me f or a meal and a gl as of beer . In retur n f or t his, the beggar stood on his head and sang songs . I gave hi m a meal . He ate t he food and dr ank t he beer . Then he put a piece of cheese in hi s pocket and went away. Later a nei ghbour t ol d me about hi m. Everybody knows hi m. Hi s nam e is Per cy But tons. He cal ls at ever y house i n t he st reet once a m ont h and always asks f or a meal and a gl ass of beer . Lesson 7 Too l at e 為時(shí)太晚 The pl ane was late and detecti ves wer e wait ing at the ai rport al m or ning. They were expect ing a valuable par cel of diamond fr om Sout h Af ri ca. A few hour s ear li er , someone had tol d the poli ce that thi eves would t ry to st eal the di am onds. When t he pl ane ar ri ved, some of the detecti ves wer e wait ing i nsi de the m ai n buil di ng whil e other s were wai ti ng on the air f ield. Two m en took the par cel off t he plane and car ri ed it int o the Custom s House. Whi le t wo detecti ves wer e keeping guar d at he door , two ot hers opened t he par cel . To their surpr ise, t he precious par cel was f ull of stones and sand! Lesson 8 The best and t he worst 最好的和最差的 Joe Sanders has the m ost beaut if ul garden i n our town. Near l y ever ybody enter s for 39。The Ni cest Garden Com pet it on39。 each year , but Joe wins every t i m e. Bil l Fri th39。s garden i s lar ger t han Joe39。s. Bi l wor ks har der t han Joe and gr ows more fl ower s and vegetables, but Joe39。s gar den is m or e i nt eresting. He has made neat paths and has bui lt a wooden bri dge over a pool. I li ke gar dens t oo, but I do not l ike hard work. Every year I ent er f or the garden peti tion too, and I always wi n a l it tl e pri ze for the wor st gar den i n t he town! Leson 9 A cold wel e 冷遇 On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hal l. I t was t he last day of t he year and a lar ge cr owd of peopl e had gat her ed under t he Town Hal clock. It would st ri ke twel ve in t wenty m inutes39。 t ime. Fif teen mi nutes passed and then, at fi ve to twelve, the cl ock stopped. The bi g mi nut e hand di d not move. We wait ed and wait ed, but not hi ng happened. Suddenl y someone shout ed, 39。I t 39。s two mi nut es past twel ve! The clock has st opped!39。 I l ooked at my wat ch. I t was tr ue.
