on,that is,to be more specific,Chinese is a language in which verbs are more widely used than those in English。He urged upon citizens of the country the necessity of persisting in participation in political controversies 他告誡全國(guó)套民,必須堅(jiān)持不懈地參加政治論戰(zhàn)。3 .1 .1 .3 When some nouns derived from verbs by adding such suffixes as “er” or “or” do not really indicate identity or some certain profession, but imply much more than the meaning of a verb,We are supposed to transform such nouns into verbs to make our translation be in better keeping with the expression habits of the Chinese language。 I am afraid I can’t teach you swimming. I think my little brother is a better teacher than I.我未必會(huì)教你游泳。Talking with his son, the old man was the forgiver of the young man’s past wrong doings.在和兒子談話(huà)時(shí),老人寬恕了年青人過(guò)去所干的壞事。As a result of this, our translated text is bound to read more fluently and naturally by means of the abovementioned transformation. For example:A fire in the neighbor’s house can easily bring disaster to everyone. 一家失火,四鄰遭殃’He was an asset at any party. He was lavish with flowers and expensive boxes of chocolate.每個(gè)宴會(huì)都有他的大駕光臨,買(mǎi)起鮮花和高價(jià)盒裝巧克力來(lái),更是大手大腳。The Sight and sound of our jet planes filled me with special longing.看到我們的噴氣式飛機(jī),聽(tīng)見(jiàn)隆隆的機(jī)聲,令我特別神往。 English Nouns Transformed into Chinese Adjectives As stated above, nouns contain a much wider meaning and are more frequently used in English than in Chinese. It is no surprise that some abstract nouns are closely related to their corresponding adjectives in meaning. If we,in our translated text, keep their word forms according to what they really are in the original text,we are bound to get into trouble. In order to make our translation read more natural and conformable to the expression habits of the Chinese language,we can but make necessary adaptations in the light of specific conditions, that is,transform the abovementioned nouns into adjectives from which they are directly derived.3 . Those abstract nouns, receded by an indefinite article are transformed into adjectives in our translation for a more appropriate and natural effect. For example:I’m a stranger to the operation of the electronic puter.我對(duì)電子計(jì)算機(jī)的操作是陌生的。We found difficulty in solving this plicated problem. 我們感到,解決這個(gè)復(fù)雜的難題是困難的。She recognized the absurdity of dealing with them through intermediaries. 她認(rèn)識(shí)到,通過(guò)中間人與他們打交道是愚蠢的。3 .1 . There is in English an “of + abstract noun” construction, serving as the predicative of the original sentence, with the abstract noun indicating characteristics or qualities of things and being closely related to their same rooted adjectives, often transformed into the corresponding Chinese “be + adjective” construction with the abstract noun in the original sentence transformed into a Chinese adjective. But it is of small importance.不過(guò)這也無(wú)關(guān)緊要。When he catches a glimpse of a potential antagonist, his instinct is to win him over with charm and humor 只要一發(fā)現(xiàn)有可能反對(duì)他的人,他就本能地要用他的魅力和風(fēng)趣將這人爭(zhēng)取過(guò)來(lái)。 Such materials are characterized by good insulation and high resistance to wear.這些材料的特點(diǎn)是:絕緣性好,耐磨性強(qiáng)。 When converting the English passive voice into the Chinese active voice with the“為(受,遭,挨)……”construction,we are at the same time transforming the verb serving as the predicate of the original sentence into a noun in the translated sentence. For example:Satellites must be closely watched, for they are constantly being tugged at by the gravitational attraction of the sun, the moon and the earth.由于經(jīng)常受到太陽(yáng),月亮及地球引力的影響,衛(wèi)星活動(dòng)必須加以密切的觀察。 In English, there are a great many verbs, which are derived from nouns. Those verbs, very hard to find corresponding nouns verbs in Chinese, are transformed to nouns when translated into Chinese. For example:The electronic puter is chiefly characterized by its accurate and rapid putation.電子計(jì)算機(jī)的主要特點(diǎn)是計(jì)算迅速準(zhǔn)確。He was snuffed by the toprank officials there. 他受到那邊高級(jí)官員的冷遇。He is full of vigor, but fails in carefulness.他勁頭十足,但不夠仔細(xì)。Don’t believe what he is saying, he always indulges in selfglorification. 別信他說(shuō)的,他總是大肆自吹自擂。He has a good knowledge of internal bustion engines.他對(duì)內(nèi)燃機(jī)非常熟悉。The author is grateful to his readers for valuable suggestion. 作者感謝讀者提出的寶貴意見(jiàn)。 There is in English a “the +adjective” construction, which is used to express some kind of people, who have some mon feature. In this case, these adjective must be transformed to nouns. For example:They did their best to help the sick and the wounded.他們盡最大努力去救治病人和傷員。 Transformation of adverbs English Adverbs Transformed into Chinese AdjectivesJust as a result of the transformation of a certain English verb into a Chinese noun, the adverb which modifies the English verb is naturally transformed into a Chinese adjective to modify the Chinese noun. For example:He routinely radioed another agent on the ground.他與另一個(gè)地勤人員進(jìn)行了例行的無(wú)線(xiàn)電聯(lián)絡(luò).“I suppose boys think differently from a girl” he said.他說(shuō):“恐怕男孩的思維方式與女孩的不一樣。 Oxygen is very active chemically.氧的化學(xué)性能活潑。It has rained over.雨停了. of PrepositionsPrepositions (or prepositional phrases)are so widely and frequently used in the English language that English is in some sense called “prepositional language” .“As has said in his book the pattern of English,“As a mainly analytic language,English tends to express in a phrase the function and meaning of an inflected form. This means that one of its characteristics is the prepositional phrase”(45).The English preposition, very rich and flexible in meaning, has a vigorous power of expression. It joins single words together to make an organic phrase, and joins phrases together to make a lively senescence . No one could even imagine what English would be like without prepositions or prepositional Phrases. But the Chinese language is another case. Its relationship between words or sentences depends more on logical relation or word order than on connectives in English such as prepositions and conjunctions. It is known to us all that the Chinese languag
