【正文】 t, which makes his success possible. Without a strong will, however, one can be easily distracted from his goal or discouraged by setbacks, which leads to his ultimate failure. History abounds with examples of strongwilled figures winning success. Actually, there is no better illustration of the proverb than the deeds of Gou Jian, king of Yue in ancient China. Defeated by Fu Chai, king of Wu, Gou tried every means possible to steel his will. Eventually, with the help of Fan Li and Xi Shi, he managed to rebuild his country and his armies and had Fu Chai taste the bitterness of failure. In short, a strong will is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. One should lose no chance to strength his will and remember, God helps those who help themselves. (四)圖表圖畫型 1. Changes in the Ownership of Houses in China It can be seen from the chart that there have been dramatic changes in the ownership of houses in China in the past 50 years. While the percentage of stateowned houses dropped from 70% in 1950’s to 20% in 1990’s, that of private houses soared from 30% to 80% during the same period of time. A number of factors could account for the change in the chart, but the following are the most critical ones. First, thanks to the policy of reform and openingup, the nation’s economy has been developing at a considerably high speed in the past decades. Therefore, people have more extra money to improve their housing. Secondly, other relevant state policies and the boom of real estate industry provide citizens with more opportunities to choose their own dwelling places. Last but not least, people have attached greater importance to their quality of life. Thus, more of them have purchased houses in their own favor. In a word, this chart is a perfect indicator of China’s fast expanding economy and people’s rising standard of living. Although a series of problems have arisen in the process, it is reasonable for us to believe that they can be solved in the near future with effective measures taken by both the government and the public. 2. Traveling Abroad It can be seen from the chart that there have been sharp increases in the number of people traveling abroad in City X in the past decade. As the chart shows, the year 1995 witnessed only about 10,000 people from this city touring abroad. In 2020, the number soared to nearly 40,000. Last year, more than 120,000 people in the city chose to spend their vacations outside China. A number of factors account for the change in the chart, but the following are the most critical ones. First, thanks to the policy of reform and openingup, the nation’s economy has been developing at a considerably high speed in the past decades. Therefore, the people have more extra money for traveling. Secondly, other relevant state policies and the boom of touring industry provide citizens with more opportunities to go out and see the world. Last but not least, people have attached greater importance to the quality of life, thus they spend more money and time traveling and sightseeing. In a word, this chart is a perfect indicator of China’s fast expanding economy and people’s rising standard of life. The trend of traveling abroad will further stimulate the development of our economy and broaden people’s horizons. 3. Fighting Drug Abuse It can be seen from the charts that the past years saw a sharp increase in the number of drug addicts in China. As we can see from the first chart, in 1994, there were only slightly more than 200 thousand drug addicts, while in 2020 the number soared to over 1,000 thousand. The other chart conveys a more shocking message: about 70 percent of the drug addicts in China now are young people aged under 35. A number of factors could account for this dramatic change, but the following might be the most critical ones. In the first place, as China opens its door to the outside world, its people tend to be influenced by western values and life styles. More or less, the drug addicts in China are imitating their counterparts in the . and other western industrialized countries. For another, with China transforming from a planned economy to a marketoriented one, there has appeared a vacuum in people’s faiths, especially in the youngsters’ faiths. Confronted with increasingly fierce petition in study and work, many of them resort to drug abuse as a way of relaxation. In view of the seriousness of the situation, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. For one thing, it is imperative that pertinent laws should be worked out and rigidly enforced to crack down on drug dealing, cutting off the supply of drugs. For another, a deepgoing and everlasting campaign should be launched to help the young establish the right philosophy and world view. Only with these measures taken can we expect a brighter future. 4. On Supporting the Old This is an ordinary but meaningful drawing. As we can see in it, a poor old man in shabby clothes curls into a ball. Around him are his three sons and a daughter, each of whom is keeping goal and ready to kick the old father away from himself or herself. 第二段寫法一: Simple as the drawing is, the message it conveys is profound and farreaching. As a civilized nation boasting a history of 5,000 years, Chinese have been known for their many virtues, one of which is respecting and loving the old. Yet in modern society, many people seem to have been deprived of this virtue. They lay more emphasis on pursuing their own happiness, ignoring their parents’ benefits to a great extent. 第二段寫法二: Simple as the drawing is, the message it conveys is profound and farreaching. Nowadays, many people illtreat their aged parents or refuse to support them. Taking a look around, we can find examples to
