【正文】 .................. 13 7 Acknowledgment ....................................................................................................................... 15 8 Bibliography ............................................................................................................................... 16 1 1 Introduction With the development of information technology, the countries on earth is being an unity. Nowadays, we have to face the problem of municating which owes to different language. However, nobody can say that I learn everything of one language, even after he learning the whole words, phrases and grammar. That is because language is the carrier of culture. Even if someone knowns everything about one language, he would not pletely understand native speaker?s meaning behind words. In other words, language is superficial, culture is in the deep. For normal people, translation is one of the most important ways to know an unfamiliar culture. Thus, translator has important responsibility to make readers understand the full meaning of original text, or his translation is a failure. If translator wants to achieve that goal, the first thing he should do is that the translator must really understand the original text, especially the cultural connotation behind the text. Colour terms is a typical representative. We live in a colorful world. It is said that there are more than four hundred words to describe different colour all over the world. As an active way of expression, the colour words are used a lot during normal life in both Chinese and English. And as human, the Chinese and the English has same feeling to different colour. But due to different national psychology, religion beliefs and traditional customs, one same colour word may have pletely different cultural connotation. It is essential for translator to know the difference of cultural connotation behind colour words in Chinese and English. This paper aims to achieve three goals: to explain the culture influence on colour terms translation to pare cultural connotation between Chinese and English to sum up techniques used in the translation on colour terms This paper analysis that the culture influence on colour terms translation and parison of colour terms in Chinese and English in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 respectively. In Chapter 4 the translation strategies of colour terms are presented. Chapter 5 demonstrates the conclusion. 2 2 How Culture Influences Colour Terms We live in a colorful world. There are many kinds of colour in nature. And with the development of technology, we create many colour which does not exist in nature by using chemical methods. As a result, we also create a large number of colour terms to describe these colour. There is no doubt that as the same human, Chinese and English has the same feeling of same colour. Then why a colour word means different meaning in Chinese and English? That is because of culture. As American anthropological linguisticsBenjamin Lee Whorf and his famous hypothesis suggest that language is an indispensable carrier of culture. Culture finds a better representation through language use. Our language helps mould our way of thinking and, consequently, different languages may probably express speakers39?!逗喢黝愓Z詞典》 lists 6 basic colour terms: 白 ( white),黑 (black),紅 (red),綠 (green),黃 (yellow),藍(lán) (blue)。 紅 and Red On red, in Modern Chinese Dictionary, the definition of “紅” is ( 1)像鮮血或石榴花的顏色,如紅棗,紅領(lǐng)巾;( 2)象征喜慶的紅布,如披紅、掛紅;( 3)象征勝利、成功,或受人歡迎,如紅運(yùn),開門紅,滿堂紅,他唱戲唱紅了;( 4)象征革命或政治覺悟高,如紅軍;( 5)紅利,如分紅?!?He gives three word to describe the criterion of translation。 The were still fresh in color. One was purplishred, another pink, still another a sickly ivoryyellow slightly tinged with bloodred. The sentence is describes the color of flower. These color terms can be found in each language. And 象牙色 is a material color term, can translate to “ivoryyellow”, which has no lost meaning. (2)┅┅ 紅的火紅,白的雪白,青的靛青,綠的碧綠,更有那一株半株的丹楓夾在里面 ┅┅ The red were as red as fire, the white as white as snow, the blue as blue as indigo and the green as green as emerald, while here and there were a few red maples. The sentence is also describes the color of plant. (3)Through a crack in the wall, the sky was a fishbelly gray. 魚肚白從土壁的破洞里鉆進(jìn)來了。 Literal Translation Adding Explanatory Note In some situation, literal translation can not express the full meaning of source text. Or, there is no corresponding meaning in reader?s culture. At the moment, we can add a explanatory note to explain what the truth meaning of colour term is. For example: (1) Black Tuesday 黑色星期二 (It refers to 19th October in 1987 (Tuesday in America) when Wall Street stock market broken down). If we do not add the explanatory note, the reader in Chinese can not understand the exact meaning of the word. 12 (2)他們分別的前一天,他送她一顆 紅豆 。 In America, money is green. So green is always connected with money. Green power means the power of money. We do not have the connotation in Chinese. (2) Blue Stocking 才女 The connotation es from English society. In 17th century, the lady who is talent wears blue stocking. Addition of Colour Words The color words are usually used to express the extend sense. Sometimes, add a color word can make target text more fluent and easier to understand. For instance: 13 (1) He did not do in vain. 他沒有白干。 Transformation of Colour Words At most times, owing to different cultural background, it is hardly to find the exact right color word in target text. Under the situation, we usually chang another word to make target text close to source text without losing the rhythm. For instance: Blue film 黃色電影 , black sugar 紅糖 , black tea 紅茶 (1) 他的身上青一塊紫一塊。 ( 3) 看著有些人富起來,他就臉紅
