It is just the self criticism and self recollection of the people in 20th century. There are many studies about symbolism in the The Little Prince. For examples, Hu Yulong tries to study the symbolic meanings of images in the work and he holds the opinion that it is great vitality and realistic meaning of the work in nowadays. Xi Yanhong studies the symbolic meaning of The Little Prince through analyzing the background of the author. In her essay, she refers responsibility of people in nowadays. Zheng Wei resists that it is the death the little prince reflects the true meaning of life. From his point of view, the death of the little is disappointed with the ugly world and returning back to purity. Base on their studies, this essay tries to seek love and responsibility through analyzing symbolic meanings in The Little Prince. The symbolic meanings play a very important role in studying the growing of the little prince. 2 The symbolic meanings in the growing of the little prince The little prince escapes from love The little prince leaves his pla to travel because of a rose. He finds a special and beautiful rose on his pla and fells in love with the rose unconsciously. He spends a lot time talking with her and takes care of her but feels sad and uneasy about the rose’ proud ,vain and untruthful gradually. After a quarrel, the little prince leaves his pla and tries to find the true meaning of life. The relationship between the little prince and the rose is ―symbiotic attachment‖. ―If a person loves only one other person and is indifferent to all others, his love is not love but a symbiotic attachment, or an enlarged egotism.‖(Fromm, 2021:28) Symbiotic attachment means live together and need each other. It divided into active situation and passive situation. The main characteristic of the one who are in passive situation is resigned to the active one. The little prince is in the passive situation most time. The rose doesn’t know how to love others and how to express her cares. She always to ask for something and ―threatens‖ the little prince. In this situation, both of them can’t realize what love and responsibility means. The little prince finds it is hard to achieve selfrespect and selfvalue in the relationship with the 5 rose. He feels tired of it and determines to leave his asteroid to seek selfvalue and true meaning of life. It is a long and suffered travel of realizing love and responsibility. The symbolic meaning of the rose is love but it is not mature love in the period of time. The leaving home of the little prince symbolizes the escaping of love. Symbols of “Selflove” and “l(fā)ove others” The little prince es across various residents in other asteroids which symbolize ―selflove‖ and ―love others‖. ―Selflove‖ and ―love others‖ should be connected with each other, just as the Bible says, ―Love you neighbors, just as love yourself.‖ The love of oneself can’t be isolated from the respect and love toward others. However, the libido of the residents in the six asteroids is either toward oneself or toward others. The one is unable to love others if he can’t love himself and he is also unable love others truly if he can’t love himself. So, those residents are lack of ability of love and undertaking responsibility. They even don’t know the true meaning of life and lack the sense of self value. Residents in the five asteroids The symbolic meaning of the residents in the five asteroids seems to be selflove. What the residents live on the first five plas is the king, the conceited man, a tippler, businessman and a geographer. In a sense, they are all selfish and selfinterest. They are only interested in the partly ―selfvalue‖ of themselves and try to satisfy themselves from the world. They are full of desire and all have an absurd logic for their absurd behavior. They are lacking the passion and interest of the real world. The king is the symbol of political power clearly. He believes that all people are under his authority and he controls everything. The king is a rational symbol of authority from a deeper level. He is an autocratic ruler who does not allow others to defy his orders. The authority of the king cannot control weather the little prince yawn or not, he cannot order the sunset e early neither. What his authority is to condemn an old rat to death from time to time but he has to pardon the rat each time to allow his authority to be continued. The conceited man wears a strange hat to salute to people when they applaud to 6 him. But he has no one others on his pla at most times. He believes that everyone is his admirer and what he hears is praise. The conceited man wants the little prince to regard him as the handsomest, the bestdressed, the richest, and the most intelligent man on his pla. However, he is the only man on his pla. The little prince feels strange what in that for interest him for to make people admire him. The symbolic meaning of the conceited man is ridiculous vanity. The businessman is even too busy to look up when the little meets him. He only breaks up 3 times from calculated the number of stars in 54 years he live on his pla. He keeps on calculating all the times and tries to own stars by this way. He nearly fets the name of the star without the reminding of the little prince. He names stars that little golden objects that set lazy men to idle dreaming. What he does with the stars is counting them and writes down the number of the stars on a little paper and then put this in a drawer and lock it with a key.
