【正文】 ears to make. In fact, the rom was not made to be a gi ft. It was designed for the palace of Fredri ck I. H owever, the next Ki ng of Prussi a, Fredrick Wi li am I, to whom the am ber room bel onged, deci ded not to keep it. In 1716 he gave i t to Peter the Great. In return, the Czar sent him a troop of his best sol diers. So the Amber Room became part of the Czar’s winter pal ace in St Petersburg. About four metres long, the room served as a sm al l reception hal l for im portant vi stors. Later, Catheri ne Ⅱ had the Am ber Room m oved to a palace outsi de St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She tol d her arti sts to add more detai ls to it. In 1770 the room was pl eted the way she wanted. Al most si x hundred candles li t the room, and i ts mi rrors and pictures shone l ike gol d. Sadly, al though the Am ber Room was si dered one of the wonders of the worl d, i t is now m issi ng. In September 1941, the N azi army was near St Petersburg. Thi s was atime when the two countri es were at war. Before the N azis coul d get to the summer pal ace, the Rusians were abl e to remove some furnitures and smal art objects from the Am ber Room. However, som e of the Nazi s secretl y stol e the room itsel f. In less than two days 10000 pi eces were put inside twentyseven woden boxes. There i s no doubt that the boxes were then put on a trai n for Koni gsberg, whi ch was at a tim e a German city on the Baltic Sea. After that, what happened to the Am ber Room remai ns a mystery. Recentl y, the Russi ans and Germans have bui lt a new Am ber Room at the summ er palace. By studyi ng ol d photos of the form er Am ber room, they have m ade the new one l oke l i ke the ol d one. In 20xx i t was ready for the peopl e of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th bi thday of thei r ci ty. A fact of an opi ni on What i s a fact? Is i t som ethi ng that peopl e bel i eve? N o. A fact i s anythi ng that can be proved. For exampl e, i t can be proved that China has m ore people than any other country in the worl d. This i s a fact. Then what is an opi ni on? An opini on i s what som eone beli eves is true but has not been proved. So an opi noi on is not good evidence in a trail. For exampl e, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are beter pets than dogs”. It may be true, but i t is di ficul t to prove. Som e peopl e m ay not agree with thi s opi ni on but they also canot prove that they are right. In a trail, a judge must deci de which eyewi tneses to beli eve and whi ch not to beli eve. The judge does not consider what each eyewi tness l ooks li ke or where that person li ves or works. H e/She onl y cares about whether the eyewi tness has given true i nform ati on, whi ch m ust be facts rather than opi nions. Thi s ki nd of i nform ati on i s cal ed evi dence. Bi g Feng to the rescue His friends and famil y cal him “Big Feng” because he is bery tal l and played basketbal as a young man. But he is al so big i n a di fferent way — he fights hard to protect China’s past. His real name is Feng Jicai and he has wri ten m any novels about li fe i n Chi na. Several years ago, however, he put down hi s pen for a whi le and began to protect the cltural reli cs i n Tianji n, where he li ves. O nce someon asked him why he no longer wrote. H e repl ied that at the m oment he felt protecti ng cul tural reli cs was m ore im portant. Feng l oves hi s hometown. H e bel ieves that ol d things m ust be given a pl ave next to new thi ns, or peopl e wil soon fet ther great past. He does not m ake speeches to get others to hel p him i n hi s projects. Instead he goes out and does what he can him esel f. If others fol ow him , so m uch the better. O ne of his biggest projects was to protect the ol dest street i n Tianji n. Along that street som e shops had done busi ness for seven hundred years. Althought the ci ty governm ent rebuil t thi s street, they di d save i ts oldest buil di ng. Another project was more successful: he persuaded the city governm ent to buy some l and i n the centre of the ci ty so i t could not be sol d for busi nesses. This area i s very improtant for the hi story of Ti anji n. It was here that the ci ty was fi rst buil t duri ng the Song Dynasty. Later many treasures were found here. To Feng, di ggi ng down in to the earth i s li ke readi ng page after page of a book. Each dynasty found i n the earth i s li ke an i nteresti ng story. N ot l ong ago he and other wri ters and arti sts tok photos of the ol d parts of Ti anji n. The photos were put i nto a book whi ch was very popul ar. The m oney from the book hel ps hi s prjects. O nce, and ol d m an asked Feng to si gn a book for him, saying he woul d gi ve i t to hi s grandson who was not yet born. Feng was gl ad to do i t he knows that he past i s not onl y for us to enjoy but also for the chil dren of the future. Uni t 2 An i ntervi ew Pausani as, who was a Grek wri ter about 20xx year ago, has e on a m agi cal journey on March 18th , 20xx to fi nd out about the presentday Ol ym pi c Games. H e i s now i ntervi ewi ng Li Yan, a vol unteer for the 20xx O lym pi cs Gam es. P: My nam e is Pausani as. I li ved i n what you cal “ Anci ent Grece” and I used to wri te about the O lympic Games a l ong tim e ago. I’ ve e to your ti me to fi nd out about the presentday Ol ym pi c Gam es because I know that i n 20xx they were hel d i n m y homeland. May I ask you som e questi ons about them odern O l ympics? L: Good heavens! Have real y e from so long ago? But of course you can ask any questi ons you l ike. What woul d you l ike to know? P: H ow often do you hol d your Gam es? L: Every four years. There are two m ai n sets of Gam es—the Wi nter and the Summer Ol ympics, and both are hel d every four years on a regul ar basi s. The Wi nter O lym pi cs are usual y hel d two years before the Summ er Gam es. O nl y athletes who have reached the agreed standard for thei r event wi l b
