【正文】 r’s relationship with Hermia involves the theme of love’s difficulty mainly. First, there is a cruel law that the daughter cannot disobey her father’s will to marry another. Otherwise, she will be punished to death. Since it is a law, everybody should obey this rule. She cannot change the law.Secondly, her father, Egues, insists on that Hermia can marry only to Demetrius, not Lysander. Egues does not allow her to marry Lysander. If she disobeys his will, she should face death. It is the difficulty from her father. Egues does not like Lysander to be the husband of his daughter. Thirdly, Demetrius loves her very much. He wants her to be his wife very much though Hermia loves Lysander not him. If he just gives up or loves Helena who loves him very much, the love39。關(guān)鍵詞:仲夏夜之夢(mèng);主題;愛的艱難;夢(mèng)An Analysis of the Themes of A MidSummer Night’s DreamIntroductionThe main plot of A Midsummer Night39。它包含兩個(gè)主題:愛的艱難和夢(mèng)。 love’s difficulty。內(nèi)江師范學(xué)院本科畢業(yè)論文(設(shè)計(jì))本 科 畢 業(yè) 論 文題目: An Analysis of the Themes of A MidSummer Night’s Dream院 別:外 國(guó) 語(yǔ) 學(xué) 院專 業(yè): 英 語(yǔ)班 級(jí):2007 級(jí) 4 班姓 名:蔣 小 曉學(xué) 號(hào):2 0 0 7 0 5 4 0 1 6 4 Contents Abstract: 2Introduction 3I. This article focuses on the two themes that are related to each other closely.Key Words: A Midsummer Night’s Dream。 theme。 dream摘要:《仲夏夜之夢(mèng)》是一部很受歡迎的喜劇。本文就這兩個(gè)相互影響的主題展開討論。s Dream is very plex because it involves two sets of couples (Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius) whose romantic crosspurposes are plicated still further by their entrance into the play’s fairyland woods where the King and Queen of the Fairies (Oberon and Titania) preside and the folk character of Puck plies his trade. Shakespeare wrote this play as a light entertainment to acpany a marriage celebration. The play is a pure edy full of the element of fairy tale. There is no moral purpose. It is one of Shakespeare’s funniest and most popular edies. The tone of the play is so lighthearted that the audience never doubts that things will end happily, and it is, therefore, free to enjoy the edy without being caught up in the tension of an uncertain oute.A Midsummer Night39。s difficulty of Hermia will be reduced. However, Demetrius wants to pete with Lysander. Forthly, Hermia tells the secret to Helena. In the real world of Athens, they two can not do what they what to do. She cannot marry Lysander openly in the real world of Athens. So they escape. She tells Helena, which is proved to be a mistake later. What is more, Helena tells Demetrius. Their love affairs bee more plicated. If Hermia does not tell anyone, the development of love will be smoother.Fifthly, the fairy wood is set at night and in a dark forest. It gives people a kind of dimness. At night, people cannot see clearly and think carefully. The darkness has controlled them. So in the play, the difficulty of the love bees more difficult.Sixthly, in the world of the fairy wood, the love potion should take the most responsibility. 1 It makes people love the one who appears at the first sight after he wakes up. The love potion symbolizes the fact that the lovers themselves will not reason out their dilemmas。s misfired arrows. Fairies use it to wreck romantic havoc. Because of the love potion, the situation of the young Athenian lovers bees increasingly confused. Lasander loves Helena instead of Hermia. Seventhly, the fairies do not have love experience. They do not know how to deal with love affairs. It is believed that Puck should be the chief criminal. There was a popular tradition regarding fairies in England in Shakespeare’s time. Fairies were usually imagined as malicious creatures, and were associated with devils and witches. The word Puck was name used to describe demons or devils. Puck mistakenly lets the love potion on Lysander’s eyelids instead of Demetrius’s, making Lysander fall in love with Helena instead of Hermia. Eighthly, sexual desire is another reason of the difficulty. Lysander wants to sleep with Hermia together. But Hermia refuses to do it. The reason why Lysander wants to do it is the sexual desire toward Hermia. Lysander says: “One turf shall serve as pillow for us both。 for my sake, my dear, Lie further off yet, do not lie so near.” (A MidSummer Night’s Dream 50)At last, in the real world of Athens, there are some social pressures on men and women. The feudalism and convention are examples. Theseus says: “But earthlier happy is the rose distills’d, Than that which withering in the virgin thorn Grows, lives, and dies, in single blessedness.” (A MidSummer Night’s Dream 10) It indicates that all mon people agree with Theseus that a woman who has married to whomever she loves or does not love is happier than a nun.
