In the beginning, the glasses is clean and unbroken, because lighting a fire relies on his glasses according to the theory of optics. For Piggy, glasses are extremely important because of his myopia. In other word, he can’t move without glasses. Still further, he forms a habit that he always wipes his glasses when facing rejections and difficulties in order to get some help or find a solution. For this reason, glasses stand for the progress of our society.Although glasses symbolize the science and rationality in this novel, it also reflects the bad influences. It helps children light a hopeful fire first, and it causes a fire disaster, then one of its eyeglasses are broken, finally, it is grabbed by Jack—all of these processes mean that the science and rationality are not always mastered in those who have rationality and wisdom. Maybe it is led by those who are evil. Therefore, he clearly observes the class fight and social turbulence of western capitalism society and truly experiences the time of economic crisis. To some extents, Golding holds an opposed opinion to the Industry Revolution, so glasses—the science and rationality, belong to both the side of goodness and the side of evilness. Beast: Instinct of SavageryThe beast is mentioned for several times in this novel, which is mentioned by some little boys at the first time. The extreme unusual situation on the island is the beast which leads the boys to fear and terror of it. According to the little boys, the beast referred to various things, such as the snakething, the pilot and Simon. Through the ing of the beast, there are two sides of people who hold different viewpoints on it. The one is Simon, and his recognition is that there is no real beast —there is only the power of the boys’ fear. “What I mean is. … maybe it’s only us” (William Golding 1999:48) Then, he finds the fact that the real is a corpse of a pilot. The other is Jack, and he uses this fear to gain more and more supporters. In truth, he is the one who builds up a region of terror. Actually, the beast is just boys’ imagination.According to the analysis mentioned before, the beast is not existent in real life. In this novel the beast is regarded as the evilness in mankind. When Simon wants to tell them this fact, he is killed by Jack and other children. Is there any difference between these children’s actions and the beast? The answer is no. Therefore, it is a symbol of instinct of savagery. Stones: ViolenceAnother vital symbol used to present the theme of the novel—violence and destructive force, is stones. In this novel, the situation of throwing stones arises four times. Ralph, Simon and Jack push a big stone under the mountain in the first time in order to make the boys safe when they watch the terrain. Then, as a joke, Roger throws the small stones to Henry. But this is not a game, it is the beginning of evil in Roger’s heart. What’s more, Piggy is bungle by the stone that is pushed by Roger quietly when he and Ralph want Jack to return his glasses back. The stone degenerates into a real evil power at this moment. At last, the stone appears when Jack decides to kill Ralph who hides in a forest. The result is that Jack is a reckless leader who wants to destruct all the creations.From all of these, stones stand for the awful violence. What’s more, it is clear from the novel that the stone is pushed by the people every time. So, it means that the violence is made by people, and the basis of the violence is human beings. Fire: hope and destructionAs is wellknown, the fire is a quite important thing for everyone to make a living, especially on the island. In addition, it also brings some disasters to human beings. In another word, the fire is not only rational, but also irrational. It can be used to prepare food, give protection, and be fort able at night. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph advises to light a fire in order to be rescued. He believes that it is possible to be saved if there is a fire on the mountain. Then, he uses Piggy’s glasses to light a fire, and arranges some boys to protect the fire orderly. The intention of Ralph is good, and it symbolizes the hope. However, in this big fire, a little boy is burned because of happiness of these boys. Even so, there is no one who finds that a little boy is missing. Little by little, the meaning of lighting a fire is changing. That is to say, the fire makes the hope of salvation bee weak and the evilness bee bulgy.Moreover, the fire is lighted from the top of the mountain to the bottom of it, which embodies that the nature of fire is changeable. If the first fire is the foreboding of the evilness, the last fire pletely shows the evilness and the dark side of human beings. The last big fire is lighted by Jack to capture Ralph—the only representative of the goodness. The story happens after the World WarⅡ, and Golding himself experiences the war.
